So DVDTalk reviewed this one. How does a movie get 3.5/5 stars (70%) and come "highly recommended?"

Depends on the critic I think? For Olie it seems a 2.5 and 3 are recommended, 3.5 and 4 are Highly Recommended, and 4.5 is "Collector Series". If he ever gave out a 5/5, I think DVDTalk might implode.

Or there's no correlation and it's a 7/10 movie that's highly recommended.

Who knows, but I read that entire review and didn't really learn anything that I couldn't have figured out from the trailer or by reading imdb.

Will most likely see this Friday at a matinee with Movie Pass.

Was thinking about going tomorrow, but I might be too tired to stay awake for an evening show.

But, I have 3 Cinemark giftcards that I got for Christmas, $12.50 left from a Fandango GC I have left, and 3 AMC Black Ticket vouchers. So I have many payment options. I'm leaning towards saving all those for the summer movie season.

Just finished. IMO didn't quite live up to the hype. I left a little disappointed. I liked it but didn't love it. It is a different type of Marvel movie, and almost very slow in some parts. I don't know. I need to think about it some more, and I may like it more on a 2nd viewing.

I liked all the characters, and everyone did well but the first 40-45 mins was pretty slow for me. It picked up in Korea, but then back off again afterwards. 3 scenes in the ethereal seemed like a lot. Losing his kingship seemed like a better story for the sequel, not the first one when he just became king.

Theater was packed though. Not much reaction aside from the comedy bits. No applause at the end.

IDK. Gotta sleep on this one.

^Mostly the opposite reaction from me. Unlike Wonder Woman, the hype delivered for me. I’ll talk more later when I get on a keyboard.

Why So Blu?

I liked it a lot -- it's a very expansive universe and I really enjoyed the world building, tribes, technology, Wakanda I general, etc. Hell, There were parts that were straight out of middle earth. The cinematography and production design were outstanding.

I liked WW a lot, and I liked this a lot, too. I went in with zero hype, though. Just decided at the last minute to drive over to the Drafthouse and use my MoviePass.

Agreed with all of the above. Really good stuff, and although the fight scenes were few and far between, that didn't bother me in the slightest. Some fights were great... the one in the casino had one excellent tracking shot. There were a couple more in the film, but that one stood out. I actually really liked how the fights were filmed.

edit: Stan Lee's cameo was pure cringe, but I expected nothing less.

Oh, I skipped the after credits shit, as I had to piss bad. Anyone want to fill me in? I assume there was a mid-credits scene and one after all the credits?

Very good movie, but (not surprisingly) falls well short of the recent hype. It's on par with previous origin movies & is a solid addition to this shared Marvel universe. Has just enough character and style of its own to make it stand out from the others.

I felt the plot itself was quite predictable and clichι, there simply isn't all that much excitement to go around. Action was a bit lacking compared to prior Marvel flicks but good enough overall.

Visuals & production design were top notch. Wakanda is quite impressive, with its own unique mash-up of a technically advanced civilization that still holds onto its ancient culture. The costumes, makeup, and excellent original soundtrack were great as well.

There's humor but thankfully it's ratcheted down a few notches compared to GoTG or Thor 3. T'Challa isn't cracking jokes mid-fight. He remains serious & grounded in the severity of the situations he finds himself in.

The movie does a great job establishing the soul of T'Challa and his capabilities, and sets him up perfectly going into A: IW.

Thinking about it, I got over hyped. And it was an origin story, and those are slower than a sequel that is more established. I think I will like it more on a 2nd viewing.

Caught this today. Really liked it, and while I too don't think it's what all the reviews say, it was still very entertaining. Loved the epic scale of the story, and the acting was top notch from everyone. I truly feel that this movie is what the first Thor should have been (which when you look back, pretty dang low rent compared to these later Marvel efforts) . The best part was the character depth and development, especially with Killmonger. Very seldom do you get a comic movie villain who isn't evil just for the sake of being evil. Effects work was well done, but like almost all tentpole movies nowadays, too reliant on CG .

Just got back from a matinee. I wasn't blown away by it, but I thought it was pretty good.

It's a very different Marvel super hero movie. Takes a very different route with it's storytelling. They did try to incorporate more of a social message in this as opposed to making this your standard action packed Marvel action movie.

They did a good job creating the kingdom of Wakanda. Quite impressive what they managed to create.

Why did Killmonger think he was entitled to the throne in Wakanda? T'Chaka was the King and after he was killed off in Civil War, T'Challa was the rightful heir. Was surprised to see Sterling K. Brown as Killmonger's father.

The chase sequence in South Korea was pretty spectacular.

I really liked Letitia Wright as Shuri. She was cute and was sort of like Black Panther's "Q"

A solid B+ from me. Wasn't the best Marvel movie, but it was different and had some pretty cool sequences and tried to be deeper and I appreciated that.

Decent sized crowd for a morning showing. Noticed the next showing at noon had a lot of seats taken. Most everyone stayed for both credits scenes.

Out of all the things, the only problem I had was the casting involving Forest Whitaker. His character appeared to be in his late 50s, but his younger self was like 19 or 20 in 1992??

Speaking of poor Whitaker, is there another Disney franchise around that he can thrive in?

The Bus

Went to see it with a few other people and we loved it. Lots of dressing up and costumes in the theater, lots of laughter at some lines (“Colonist!”), a fair amount of applause. For an origin story it’s up there with Homecoming. Highly recommended.

I didn't love the movie. I was sitting near an obese couple who brought along a crying baby with a bad case of whooping cough, so that certainly didn't enhance the experience. Despite that constant distraction, I still found myself struggling to stay awake during the last hour. I think the script could have benefited from more humor. There were plenty of lines that were clearly meant to be funny, but I don't think I laughed once. For me, this is perhaps the most critically overrated superhero flick ever (well, other than Wonder Woman).

That said, it played great with the crowd I saw it with. I was curious to find out how much of a draw this movie would be for the black community in my area. My brother and I showed up for an 11 AM matinee and soon discovered we were just about the only white people in the sold out screening. I've seen every MCU installment during the first week of release and the crowds have always been predominantly white, so it was interesting to see that kind of shift in turnout.

At least half the audience consisted of black students on a field trip from some academy (mostly in their late teens). The theater staff had already reserved all the middle rows in the auditorium for them. Had I know that before buying my ticket, I would have definitely waited and gone to a later showing to score a better seat. I noticed a few older women showed up in full African dress and head wrap, though none of them sat together. Not sure if they were there on their own or were chaperoning the trip.

From their reactions after the movie was over, I suspect this was the first exposure to the MCU for a good portion of that group. One girl even said "Moses? Is that Moses?" when Bucky showed up in the post-credits scene. Unless she was a rabid comic fan and was mistaking him for Moses Magnum (which I doubt), I guess she just assumed this movie had ties to the old testament.

Liked this, didn't love it.

Coogler def made a film that doesn't completely adhere to the Marvel Formula, although it winds up so bogged down by exposition the running time often feels beleaguered.

Boseman is great; regal, stoic, powerful. Jordan was a highlight, too, although I hope blacks leave the film recognizing his ideals are harmful and not empowering.

I feel like Coogler used Killmonger as a mouthpiece for contemporary black views on how they see themselves within the world and I wish his social commentary had been more challenging than simply subscribing to the current narrative that blacks are victims and it is time for their "oppressors" to be overthrown. Coogler didn't even suggest part of the problem may be coming from within the community. A missed opportunity.

Cinematography was gorgeous, although the action scenes were poorly shot and edited. Hard to tell what was happening a lot of the time, an issue exacerbated by the dark skin of the cast.

Serkis was great. Sad to see him go.

Freeman played the Token Dumb White Guy, which was a not-so-subtle dig at how Coogler likely feels blacks have been historically represented in this type of film.

Why was T'Challa's sister the only one who produced new tech? Wakanda should've had a team of dozens, at least, in that lab space.

Making T'Challa king, then having him lose it, then regain it is a storyline they should've saved. The "lost hero" plot works best in a sequel when internal conflict often feels greatest. It caused this film to lose some focus.

The Afrofuturistic tech and aesthetic was neat.

I think it's great blacks are showing up in record numbers and are excited to see such strong representation on screen, but journalists need to stop acting like black leads or casting is novel. Let's just celebrate the fact Marvel has made a film that speaks to black culture and leave it at that; no need to desperately search for some FIRST TIME EVER headlines.

Most of the humor fell flat for me except for M'Bathu's lines. Dude was hilarious.

Post-credit scenes were extremely pointless.
