David Cassidy, pop culture idol of the 1970s, has died as a result of complications from dementia. The musician and actor was 67.
His publicist JoAnn Geffen confirmed his death, with a statement from his family. “On behalf of the entire Cassidy family, it is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our father, our uncle, and our dear brother, David Cassidy. David died surrounded by those he loved, with joy in his heart and free from the pain that had gripped him for so long. Thank you for the abundance and support you have shown him these many years.”
He had been hospitalized for several days with organ failure. Cassidy announced his diagnosis with dementia in early 2017. He performed at the B.B. King Blues Club & Grill in New York in March, talking about his dementia, and said his arthritis made playing guitar an ordeal.

When I heard of his condition a few days ago, I looked up more details about his life. For all the success in his young life, he certainly had his fair share of struggles. Marriages, bankruptcy, alcoholism and finally his physical difficulties.

Shirley Jones, Susan Dey, Danny Bonaduce, and Jeremy Gelbwaks/Brian Forster (Chris Partridge) are still with us. Madden died in 2014 and Suzanne Crough (Tracy) died in 2015.

Very sad news - he was a big part of my childhood, and was probably the most popular star in 1971-73 with preteens (my age at the time) and early teens (Life magazine even speculated he might be the Elvis of the 70's!) . He had the bad luck to be a "teen idol" in an era where you really didn't get much of a chance to have much of a career past your heyday even though he was extremely handsome well into his late 30's and one of the few Teen Beat/16 idols who actually could sing very well.

I always hate to hear about people dying so young. You make it to your 80's or 90's, that's great. Makes me feel helpless to hear when someone passes from an unavoidable illness.

Some of the videos of him in concert when it was affecting him are pretty painful to watch. He even acknowledges it during a show and mentions it will be his last tour.

It's very ppossible that ShirleyJones could outlive the entire cast of the show even though she was one ot the older cast members on the show. Charlotte Raye has nearly outlived the entire original cast of Diff'rent Strokes even though she was a little beyond middle age when the show started in 1978.
