I have a question about the HDMI to Component Converter I bought 5 years ago:

As I said earlier in this thread, I have an older Pioneer WS HDTV projection TV that has no HDMI capabilities. My blu-ray player does have HDMI capabilities. I bought an HDMI to Component converter from Monoprice (they don't appear to even sell it anymore, at least I couldn't find it). I've just noticed that while I can max the volume on my receiver, my TV volume only turns up to a certain level and will go no further. TV volume can be increased (ideally) to 63 while the TV volume only actually increases to about 42 or 43, and will go no louder even if you keep cranking the TV volume to max.

Is this typical behaviour with these converters for one side of the converted audio or video signal to deteriorate and I've just never noticed it before? I swear I used to be able to turn the TV volume up louder than that if I needed to but not anymore.

If this converter has malfunctioned I need to buy a new one. Any suggestions since Monoprice doesn't appear to carry it anymore? I find Component to HDMI there but no HDMI to Component...

Have you tried running Optical direct to the receiver for audio? From your description it sounds like the converter also outputs RCA audio, which you're using?

The receiver audio is fine, I have no issue with that. The TV audio I wanted independent so I could listen to it without having to turn on the receiver (wife doesn't like messing with having to turn on the receiver to watch TV or a DVD while I'm at work, she likes things simple). This Pioneer TV has decent audio (I also have 2 towers, separate from the TV audio; stereo, not surround), it's just that lately I haven't been able to turn the TV audio up past 42 or 43 (capable audio is 63) while I have a movie going. I can crank up the receiver volume but the TV volume won't go past a certain point. I don't remember right now how I have the cables set up, tried to go in there with a flashlight and trace cables but got frazzled and quit. I can tell you that originally I could crank the TV volume and the receiver volume independent of each other, which I need for some of these movies.

RGB and Audio R/L plugged into the converter Output, HDMI plugged into Input going to the BR player. The HDMI cable from the converter is the only cable plugged into the BR player.

Ah, OK. Does your converter have an independent power source? Maybe try resetting it? There are still plenty of options on the market if you need a replacement. Something like this:

Yes, independent power source. I looked at the one you linked to, also looked at this one, thought the Volantech looked like it would do the job, got good reviews...

That is, if you think the converter is malfunctioning. To reset, just unplug it, leave it off for a minute, then plug it back in?

Does the tv have DVI input?
You could run an HDMI>DVI cable for video.

No DVI, just VGA. That's why I'm stuck with RGB component cables and why I wanted to adapt that to HDMI to try to squeeze as much as I could out of this setup. This has been an outstanding TV (Pioneer 53" WS projection TV) that has lasted for many years. If it ever dies I know what I'll aim for but I hope that's not for a long time yet (knock on wood).

The TV audio is what I'm concerned with and I'm wondering if it's because the converter is malfunctioning. It has been plugged in and lit up like a red christmas tree for 5 years...

I could be wrong but I don't think you can alter the audio output via HDMI within the player. So if the TV is fine otherwise, I would look at the converter as the possible source. Yeah; let it sit unplugged for a while. Maybe re-seat the audio cable on both ends (converter and TV) while it's sitting unplugged. Reconnect everything and try again.

Could you try a different audio In on the TV to eliminate that as the possible cause?
