Finch (2021, D: Miguel Sapochnik) S: Tom Hanks

Tom Hanks will star in “Bios,” the hot spec package making the rounds around town with “Game of Thrones” helmer Miguel Sapochnik directing.

Penned by Craig Luck and Ivor Powell, the story follows a robot that lives on a post-apocalyptic earth. Built to protect the life of his dying creator’s beloved dog, it learns about love, friendship, and the meaning of human life. Hanks will play the ailing creator.

Robert Zemeckis and Kevin Misher is producing.

The package started being shopped around earlier this month and Amblin is the likely landing spot though Legendary and Warner Bros. is still in the mix. Once picked up, the plan is to begin shooting the film in the first quarter of 2018 when Hanks’ schedule frees up.

Hanks can be seen next in Steven Spielberg’s “The Post” as former Washington Post editor-in-chief Ben Bradlee. The film will bow this December and is expected to be an award season contender, as is Hanks. He was recently seen in the STX thriller “The Circle.”

Sapochnik is best known for his work on the fan-favorite “Game of Thrones” episode “Battle of the Bastards,” which earned him an Emmy for best directing.

Hanks is represented by CAA and Sapochnik is repped by WME.

A robot protecting a dog.

That sounds great but movies about a dog as a main character are tough for me.

Movies about dogs only exist to make audiences cry.

re: Finch (D: Miguel Sapochnik) S: Tom Hanks

“Bios,” an upcoming sci-fi drama starring Tom Hanks, has been sold to Apple TV Plus.

Amblin Entertainment produced the film, which was intended to be distributed by Universal Pictures in theaters this August. With its purchase from Amblin, Apple TV Plus has renamed the movie “Finch.” The company has yet to set an official release date, but sources say it’s aiming for late 2021.

Insiders suggest the pic was sold to Apple TV Plus due to the impaired theatrical landscape. Though the movie theater business appears to be on the mend after nearly a year of COVID-19-related closures, some executives think “Finch” will be better served on a streaming service, given the crowded release schedule in 2021. Though nothing is official, the film likely won’t play on the big screen at all.

The sale marks the second Hanks film to debut on the budding Apple TV Plus following “Greyhound,” a WWII drama that was originally set at Sony Pictures. Apple TV Plus reported that the movie generated the streaming service’s largest opening weekend, but it didn’t provide any metrics to quantify that statistic. Moreover, Apple TV Plus has unveiled fewer than 10 films so that’s not necessarily a difficult benchmark to set.

Since its launch in late 2019, Apple has been making moves to bulk up its movie and TV offerings. It shelled out an eye-popping $25 million for “Coda,” a feel-good film that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, and it recently acquired Antoine Fuqua’s “Emancipation.” Apple TV Plus also shelled out a massive $200 million to become the home for Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon,” a Western crime drama starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro.

“Finch” was directed by Miguel Sapochnik, best known for his work on HBO’s fantasy epic “Game of Thrones.” Craig Luck wrote the script with Ivor Powell. The post-apocalyptic drama follows the last man on Earth, an ailing inventor name Finch (Hanks). As he nears death, he builds an android to protect his beloved dog. The cast also includes Caleb Landry Jones, Samira Wiley and Skeet Ulrich.

Glad this is on Apple. That way there’s no chance I’ll be tempted to watch it. That dog is toast.

Kind of. I can only have so much content, ya know? I may add one here or there but I need to be interested in more than one or two things. I’m also not crazy about adding in a ton of limited free trials. Jumping through all these hoops for this stuff is annoying.

Lately I’ve been leaning toward adding Paramount+ but appleTV, Peacock, AMC+, Discovery+, etc. is just becoming too much.

Is that confirmed? If so, I'm also out. I can't deal with that.

I totally understand your frustration. There’s simply not enough time and way too much fragmented movies and shows to keep up with. I did watch Hanks other Apple TV + movie Greyhound a year ago, but I haven’t touched the other Apple movies and I’ve only really watched The Morning Show and Ted Lasso among the originals.

It’s not like the old days when it was network TV and a handful of cable networks. I’ve had the Netflix the longest, but I can barely keep up with it.

I have apple+ free for a year (not sure how that happen, but no complaint on my end) and I have only watched Tom's other Naval movie.

This was ok and I liked the robot. Hope they make a second one.

Re: Finch (2021, D: Miguel Sapochnik) S: Tom Hanks

I went into this expecting that like seemingly all movies with a dog it would die
Spoiler:
he doesn't

But I really liked this. its sweet and Jeff is a bit quirky but super likeable. I really felt bad for Tom Hanks, but I loved what he did to make sure his friend was okay. I expected a really kind of down movie. But this was one of the bigger surprises for me this year
