Only saw them once, in 1986, and it was the one and only time I stage dived. Back then there were no barriers between the stage and the crowd, as well as no bouncers. You could get up on the side of the stage and sprint for about 20 feet before launching into the crowd.

I still need to really delve into their older music, particularly Zen Arcade. They're far from an "easy" punk band to listen to, with no sing-along choruses or catchy melodies. But damn fine musicianship, that's for sure.

Huh? Well, they definitely weren't The Replacements, but Grant Hart could pen an infectious tune when he wanted to. Even Marshall Crenshaw would have had trouble coming up with a song this catchy.

Here's another one that's also pretty infectious:

Great lyrics by Grant Hart too:

Well, I see you walking down the road
And the thoughts within my mind explode
But having to hold back taught me a lot about control
And letting all loose at once when it was time to let you know
You occupied my space and you occupied your mind
By jumping off the roof to the first conclusion you can find

Now all the silver you can steal
Can't buy a piece of what I feel
It's sad, but the means, they just don't justify the ends
To be forever haunted by the ghosts of all your friends
Painful, yeah, that's the way you've chosen it to be
C'mon, babe, can't you think of anyone besides me?

These are the terms!

Now don't think you're the only one who is harboring a self hate
I'm just as guilty of selling what my own sweet soul creates
And don't feel bad the next time my memory comes a creepin'
You've got your own bed now, I suggest that's the one you sleep in

.

That's odd.

From Flip Your Wig onward, I always found their stuff to be really accessible with a lot of melodic stuff and hooks...sort of punk-pop.

Warehouse especially.

They were a far cry from Sugar, but you could hear those leanings in Mould's songs. I can still hear some of their refrains...

Makes no sense at all....

He has been looking frail lately, so not surprised, but a bummer.

Yeah, not to pile on here, but I always found a good bulk of their songs to be extremely melodic, particularly Candy Apple Grey.

One of my faves:

RIP

And to the OP, Zen Arcade is their best album IMHO.
