Bad Times at the El Royale (2018, D: Goddard) S: Hemsworth, Bridges, Hamm, Johnson

Jeff Bridges and Chris Hemsworth are in talks to star in Bad Times at the El Royale, Drew Goddard’s contained thriller being made by 20th Century Fox.

Goddard wrote the script and is directing and producing the pic, which is aiming for a January 2018 start.

The story is set in the 1960s at a run-down hotel near California’s Lake Tahoe named the El Royale and centers on a cast of characters whose own shady agendas will violently collide.

The project is operating under a shadowy veil and character details are scarce.

The Oscar-winning Bridges can be currently seen in the indie drama The Only Living Boy in New York and is part of the ensemble of Fox’s upcoming action pic, Kingsman: The Golden Circle. He is repped by CAA and Mgmt Entertainment.

If a deal closes for Hemsworth, it will see the actor reteam with the helmer who directed him in the 2012 horror movie mashup Cabin in the Woods. He next reprises his role as the God of Thunder in this fall’s Thor: Ragnarok. Hemsworth is repped by CAA, ROAR and Gang Tyre.

Can't help but wonder if it's supposed to take place in the same 'universe' as Cabin In The Woods. Which would be interesting . . .

Just saw the trailer for this yesterday. Looks great and I also wonder if it's part of that Cabin in the Woods mythology. Certainly looks like it.

I still don’t get it. Cabin was a horrr. an experiment that was revealed toward end. Yes, this looks consolidated, but in same universe? C’mon. That’s a pretty big stretch, no?

So this can be "side-quel" or different kind of experiment. "Cousin" to Cabin the Woods.

That's still technically the same universe, though. The themes are definitely similar.

Hey man, it was just a feeling! But clearly I wasn't alone in my wish fulfillment, and it wasn't just based on the director, or a similar geographical setting (middle of nowhere, on a border, surrounded by the mountains, woods, British Columbia ). Even if they make no explicit connections between the two films -- after all, they're released by different studios -- people might still be able to form a connection just for kicks. Really depends on what transpires on screen, obviously, but there's more than enough slight weirdness in that trailer to suggest it's not just a run-of-the-mill pseudo-noir thriller, that there's maybe some sci-fi shenanigans under the surface that we're not being made party to just yet.

And let's face it, how cool would it be if the two were related? Handled properly, it would make for a better universe than what we've been given with Cloverfield so far.

Regardless of what ultimately happens on screen, I'm intrigued, and will be happy to be wrong as long as it's interesting and hits me with some surprises. Maybe it's a period remake of IDENTITY, and everything's happening in Chris Hemsworth's head as he walks through that magical hippie field. I like puzzle-y movies where people are more or less trapped in a menacing space full of secrets, kind of like, you know . . .

Would be nice if this turned up at TIFF this year, even better in Midnight Madness. But who knows . . .

By the way, I was perusing some earlier articles about the film, and several (circa early this year) mention Russell Crowe officially joining the cast, but he's not in the trailer, or on the poster, or listed at IMDb. I assume that didn't pan out?

Or . . . did it?

He dropped out and Hamm is in the role.

79% so far: https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/bad..._the_el_royale

Negatives paint it as "Film School Tarantino", others say it's a lot of fun.

The ads sort of remind of me Smokin' Aces crossed with Cabin in the Woods, I'm hoping it's far more the latter (despite not loving it) than former.

The first trailer to this is one of the best trailers I've seen in a LOOOOOOONG time. It's very skillfully cut.

Jeff Bridges should get first billing and not Hemsworth on the thread title.

I guess because of the non-linear first half is why its getting the comparisons to Tarantino. I like the set up. And I could see how it could be in the Cabin in the Woods universe since it would take place before CitW and it is never explained who management is.

So anybody check this out? Do they solve the mystery of Hemsworth's missing shirt?

Saw this tonight and it's a love letter to QT. It reminded me of The Hateful Eight in terms of structure.

Chris Hemsworth's hips do not lie.

I loved the film and having seen First Man last night, I would rather watch Royale 10 more times in a row than one more time with First Man. Royale was entertaining and actually good.

I liked it overall, but the blatant attempt to copy Tarantino was annoying (with the title cards and flashbacks)
