John Heard dead at 72

http://ew.com/movies/2017/07/22/john...alflow_twitter

John Heard, the actor from Home Alone and other classic ’80s and ’90s movies, died Friday in Palo Alto, California. He was 72.

The Santa Clara County medical examiner’s office, which confirmed the news to PEOPLE, is currently investigating. Cause of death is unknown.

According to TMZ, Heard’s body was discovered in a hotel, where he was recovering from “minor back surgery” completed on Wednesday at Stanford Medical Center. Police were called to the scene regarding a medical emergency, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Story is developing.

72 used to be old, and now seems so young.

I think it's the Modern Family guest star curse.

Elizabeth Pena, Jon Polito and now John Heard.

Not sure about anyone else, but the older you get, the younger someone in their 70s seems to be...

Anyway, has always been an all around solid actor.

Just saw him in something the other day. Maybe Trading Places, was he in that?

Don't think so. Maybe you're thinking of Eddie Murphy.

Re: John Heard dead at 72

I was conscious of a lot of films that I never saw at a young age, so I was somewhat familiar with Heard (Onion Fields was a much touted film at release). But I finally got to see him in Cat People- which I was a huge fan of at the time. He was a very likable, everyman kind of lead.

I haven't seen him in a whole lot, relatively, but at the same time I can't recall anything I did seem him in that I didn't like. I wasn't a fan of Cutter's Way the first time I saw it about 15 years ago. But revisiting it last year my opinion turned 180 degrees. And his performance was a big part why. Great piece of work all around.

Ironically, I just received Chilly Scenes Of Winter from the SAE sale a couple days ago. If it weren't for him in the lead, I probably would have kept passing on it.

And damn, 72 is really young. RIP

He certainly was a familiar face in a lot of '80s movies. His easy going Brother Tim in Heaven Help Us reminded me of a teacher at my high school.

If he was recovering from back surgery, I wonder if he might have overdosed on painkillers.

I just watched the Miami Vice episode with him last night. What a shame.

Yeah, that seems more likely to me than a post-surgical embolism, although both or possible or he could have just had an unrelated stroke, MI, etc.

Does it strike anyone else as odd that he was recovering from surgery in a hotel instead of at home?

Despite his many, many film credits, this 4 seconds is always what I most remember Heard for:

not really. if you have trust in a particular surgeon but don't live near them, and have been instructed not to travel for a few days, it is not uncommon to stay in a hotel or with friends until that first post-op visit and clearance to go back home.

I still say PE (or stroke) over OD.

Yeah, I guess it is something more reasonable for people of substantial means to travel to a particular surgeon for "minor back surgery". For cutting edge cancer treatment, ok, but for a laminectomy or something like that, I just find a local orthopaedic surgeon who doesn't suck.

Re: John Heard dead at 72

I thought he would end up being a big star after his performance in Cutter's Way, but he had a good career never the less. Very sad news.

He was in some great movies. Not much else I can say.

I spotted this on Twitter. A little insight past what we see in his performances.

If you get a chance, the audio commentary on C.H.U.D. by Daniel Stern and John Heard is a real hoot to listen to.

Sad news. Of course knew about him from Home Alone, but his guest role on The Sopranos was great as well.

One of my favorite commentaries.
