Just saw him in something the other day. Maybe Trading Places, was he in that?

Re: John Heard dead at 72
I was conscious of a lot of films that I never saw at a young age, so I was somewhat familiar with Heard (Onion Fields was a much touted film at release). But I finally got to see him in Cat People- which I was a huge fan of at the time. He was a very likable, everyman kind of lead.
I haven't seen him in a whole lot, relatively, but at the same time I can't recall anything I did seem him in that I didn't like. I wasn't a fan of Cutter's Way the first time I saw it about 15 years ago. But revisiting it last year my opinion turned 180 degrees. And his performance was a big part why. Great piece of work all around.
Ironically, I just received Chilly Scenes Of Winter from the SAE sale a couple days ago. If it weren't for him in the lead, I probably would have kept passing on it.
And damn, 72 is really young. RIP

He certainly was a familiar face in a lot of '80s movies. His easy going Brother Tim in Heaven Help Us reminded me of a teacher at my high school.

If he was recovering from back surgery, I wonder if he might have overdosed on painkillers.

Does it strike anyone else as odd that he was recovering from surgery in a hotel instead of at home?

Despite his many, many film credits, this 4 seconds is always what I most remember Heard for:

I still say PE (or stroke) over OD.

Yeah, I guess it is something more reasonable for people of substantial means to travel to a particular surgeon for "minor back surgery". For cutting edge cancer treatment, ok, but for a laminectomy or something like that, I just find a local orthopaedic surgeon who doesn't suck.

I thought he would end up being a big star after his performance in Cutter's Way, but he had a good career never the less. Very sad news.

He was in some great movies. Not much else I can say.
I spotted this on Twitter. A little insight past what we see in his performances.

Felt inspired to write something when I heard about the passing of my friend, John Heard... pic.twitter.com/zi7gdQZYOa

If you get a chance, the audio commentary on C.H.U.D. by Daniel Stern and John Heard is a real hoot to listen to.
