The Happytime Murders -- Noir Murder Mystery with MUPPETS!

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - The Jim Henson Co. has picked up a spec script that may signal a daring turn into adult territory for the company behind Kermit the Frog and Fozzie Bear.

"The Happytime Murders" is a film noir murder mystery that will fall under the company's Henson Alternative banner, a division that develops projects not intended for children.

Brian Henson, co-CEO of the Jim Henson Co. and one of the late puppeteer's sons, is on board to direct.

The story takes place in a world where humans and puppets co-exist, with the puppets viewed as second-class citizens. When the puppet cast of an '80s children's TV show called "The Happytime Gang" begins to get murdered one by one, a disgraced puppet LAPD detective turned private eye -- with a drinking problem, no less -- takes on the case. The script was written by Todd Berger from a story he worked on with Dee Austin Robertson.

This would not be the first time that Henson is delving into more adult fare. In 1982, the company made "The Dark Crystal," which featured a dark tone and, in one scene, nudity. But "Happytime" will also have an absurdist and comedic quality to it, comparable to Broadway's "Avenue Q."

Sounds like a cross between Meet the Feebles, Kling Klang Klatch, and the novels of this one British writer that I just can't place right now, but involve a human and a drunk teddy bear solving crime.

Yes, yes, and yes. I'm in. Isn't Jason Segel also working on a new Muppet movie?

Aw, for a second I thought Kermit, Fozzie, and the rest would actually be in the movie.

Fritz the Cat for the plushy perverts.

The Happytime Murders (D: Brian Henson)

Jamie Foxx Negotiating To Star In ‘The Happytime Murders’ At STX

EXCLUSIVE: Jamie Foxx is in early negotiations to star in STX Entertainment and the Jim Henson Company’s raucous comedy The Happytime Murders, which will combine live-action and puppetry made so famous by the Henson family. The project, which is expected to get an R-rating, will be directed by Brian Henson.

The story follows puppet stars of an iconic TV show The Happytime Gang who are some of the biggest celebrities around. But off-camera, the family-friendly cast leads the kinds of lives that would make a tabloid writer blush. When the Happytime Gang stars begin to be mysteriously murdered, two mismatched detectives – one a type-A, take-no-prisoners human with a secret and the other a crass, hard-drinking puppet with a connection to one of the victims – must put aside their differences to stop the killings and catch the culprit, all the while trying to resist the temptation to murder each other.

The screenplay is by Todd Berger & Dee Robertson, and Erich and Jon Hoeber (Red and Red 2).

The Happytime Murders (D: Brian Henson) S: Melissa McCarthy

STXfilms is teaming with Melissa McCarthy for the raunchy R-rated puppet movie The Happytime Murders, which Brian Henson will direct in conjunction with Jim Henson Company’s Henson Alternative banner.

The comedy is set in the underbelly of Los Angeles where puppets and humans coexist. Two clashing detectives, one human –played by McCarthy– and one puppet, are forced to work together to try and solve who is brutally murdering the former cast of “The Happytime Gang,” a beloved classic puppet show. A year ago, Jamie Foxx was in talks to star in Happytime Murders, but that did not solidfy.
