Frank Capra's second home and other oddities
I'm on vacation in the Coachella Valley this week and I'm staying near the La Quinta Resort where, in the 1930's, writer/director Frank Capra resided when he was not in Hollywood. I visited the casita this morning and it has a nice plaque.
Here is the plaque close up:

This is/was Capra's other La Quinta home. He was an investor in the development and this was his personal unit. It's a tract home style development with hundreds of units all built using 3 different floor plans with only slight variation. His personal unit however, has an entirely unique floor plan. He was living here in 1991 when he passed away.

Now the Scientology stuff. It turns out that the La Quinta Resort was occupied by the church of Scientology during the 1970's. I've been researching and I can't find any explanation for why a popular resort founded in the '20s would suddenly be occupied by a cult, but evidently it was and many of the buildings they used remain.
This building, currently being used as storage, was a dormitory.

And this building, more like compound, was L Ron Hubbard's home.
Stables
Gates welded shut
The compound is a private residence that does not belong to the resort. In 2009 Scientology bought it back from the then current owner. They want to turn it into a museum.

This is about 90 min from me and I’ve stayed there a few times, with another trip planned for July. Love the film history on site; a bonus because it’s the most relaxing stay I’ve ever had. Just... chill... unless the pools are flooded with kids.
Didn’t know about the Scientology stuff. I’ll have to check out some of those buildings when I’m there next.

This shit’s better than the Winchester mystery house, because it’s real. That thing is 100% bullshit.
