Actors whose careers went downhill after winning an Oscar
So which celebrities won an Oscar, and then eventually saw their careers end up on the crap heap from making bad career choices? Those who come to mind off the top of my head are:
Louis Gossett Jr: Won for Officer and a Gentleman then went on to make such classics as Jaws 3-D, Firewalker, Cover Up, The Punisher and Iron Eagle. I still love The Punisher though.
Cuba Gooding Jr: Won for Jerry Macguire and after As Good as it Gets,
Adrie Brody: Won for The Pianist, which helped get him the lead in Kong and he hasn't done anything noteworthy since. Though I enjoyed him Predators.
Mira Sorvino: Won for Mighty Aphrodite and in four years she was already doing straight to video and TV movies. I have a soft spot for her Chow Yun Fat movie though.

Without looking it up, I couldn't name a single thing that Mo'nique did after winning an Oscar for Precious.
It happens. An actor gets the right role at the right time. I'm sure it helps, but it's not necessarily a ticket to big stardom.

Reese Witherspoon hasn't done anything stellar since Walk The Line.
And I would have said Marisa Tomei, but she's had an indie (Wrestler, In The Bedroom) and now blockbuster (new Spider-Man) resurgence that I really enjoy.

Most of these people had no career to speak of before winning. The Oscar was a lucky one shot and their careers proceeded as before.

James Dunn had a good run in the 1930s but...
...during the late 1930s his prospects were further diminished by a battle with alcoholism.
In 1945 his performance in A Tree Grows in Brooklyn earned him an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. He portrayed an alcoholic but good-natured Irish father, a dreamer whose presence brought joy to those around him even though he was never a success in the traditional sense.
His success was short-lived and by the beginning of the 1950s, he was unemployed, bankrupt, and once again depending on alcohol. After 1950, he appeared in only three feature films, but continued working in television until his death.

Which is a damn shame because she may not be as pretty as someone like a Margot Robbie (in Hollywood looks trump talent), but she is a hell of a damn actress.
