59th Annual Grammy Awards (CBS) --2/12/17 8E/5P
We didn't ever start a Grammy discussion in the Music thread this year. Yes some/most of the nominees are less than inspiring. But this year, finally, the awards show is being broadcast live coast-to-coast. Can't tell you how annoying it was in the Pacific Time Zone to have ol' lizard-lips LL Cool J telling us to Tweet about things that had happened three hours ago. James Corden will be the host this year for another welcome change.
BTW : The non-televised awards start at 3PM ET/Noon PT and can be streamed at Grammy.com
Some of the nominations are below; to see the complete list, head to Grammys.com.
Record of the Year
"Hello" by Adele
"Formation" by Beyonce
"7 Years" by Lukas Graham
"Work" by Rihanna featuring Drake
"Stressed Out" by Twenty One Pilots
Album of the Year
"25" by Adele
"Lemonade" by Beyonce
"Purpose" by Justin Bieber
"Views" by Drake
"A Sailor's Guide to Earth" by Sturgill Simpson

Grammys 2017: What to expect from the awards show
By ANDREA DRESDALE
Feb 12, 2017, 5:22 AM ET
Expect to feel a wide range of emotions while watching the 59th Annual Grammy Awards Sunday evening.
According to executive producer Ken Ehrlich, the show will pack in star-studded performances, emotional tributes, and possibly, a political moment or two.
Should a celebrity bring up politics or a social issue while on stage, Ehrlich, "We're not here to censor."
"I’ve always believed that musical artists are more than just their music," he told ABC News. They have... strong feelings, and I appreciate things that they have to say."
Grammys Executive Producer Responds to Boycott Rumors
Frank Ocean: Sitting Out Grammys Is 'My Colin Kaepernick Moment'
There are, of course, a few things viewers can absolutely count on seeing while watching the show. Ehrlich told ABC News that the show will include tributes to George Michael and Prince, though each will have its own distinct feel. Michael, who died last December, will be memorialized with a "very emotional performance" involving one specific artist, and Prince, who died last April, will be honored with an "upbeat" dedication featuring a few acts.
There will also be several duets during the telecast, including Lady Gaga with Metallica, Lukas Graham with Kelsea Ballerini, and Alicia Keys with country star Maren Morris.
Katy Perry will also deliver a "unique" performance that will have "tremendous energy," said Ehrlich, adding, "Our old friends Bruno Mars and Adele are coming along and they always bring something special."
John Legend will perform the Beach Boys' "God Only Knows" during the "In Memoriam" segment.
However, one component that the Grammys won't have? An appearance by nominee Justin Bieber.
"Even with the nominations that he has, he doesn’t think this is his year," Ehrlich said of Bieber, who's nominated in the prestigious Album and Song of the Year categories. "I know he’ll be back again, but... you won’t see him on stage this year."

The power of the collaboration between Lady Gaga and Metallica was slightly diminished by the fact that they gave James Hetfield a non-working mic. Oops.

She stopped, dropped a curse word and asked to restart. I couldn't really tell what the problem was. It kinda sounded bad both times. Who the hell thought it was a good idea to slow down "Faster Love" to a dirge anyways?

Yeah I didn't think much of the performance which is a shame as I really like Adele and her performance was about the only reason I even flipped to the channel.

Didn't need Kanye this year -- Adele herself said Beyoncé should have won the Best Album award. She was right.

Okay, not one of the big highlights. Here it is.
BTW : Slate notes that David Bowie's Blackstar won five Grammys including Alternative Album and Rock Song. Before today, Bowie had only won one Grammy -- and it was for his Jazzing For Blue Jean music video.

Sad that the metal community gets dumped on while they heap praises on the same boring artists every year.

Looked like someone had it for Metallica last night. Laverne Cox didn't mention them and Hetfield had a bad mic. Did they piss off Sharon Osbourne or something?

The mic was a mistake, but how could they not introduce Metallica? It was their song! They weren't the additional musicians in a Gaga performance, she was the add-on to a Metallica performance!

It was just a flub. Laverne Cox said "Here are eight - time Grammy winners and seven-figure Grammy winner Lady Gaga!" and I thought 'WTF does that mean?' until they cut to a silent Hetfield and I figured it out.
