Newly elected Pope Pius XIII (Jude Law), a.k.a. Lenny Belardo, defies expectations as he settles in at the Vatican to begin his reign. The youngest and first American pope in history, Lenny's ascension was orchestrated by the Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Voiello (Silvio Orlando), who mistakenly believed the young pope would follow his lead on policy and protocol. Instead, Lenny shuns Voiello and tasks his confessor, Don Tommaso (Marcello Romolo), to share details on the private thoughts and motives of those in his inner circle.
Meanwhile, as Cardinal Spencer (James Cromwell), Lenny's onetime mentor, stews about being passed over as pontiff, the new pope flies in Sister Mary (Diane Keaton), who raised him since he was delivered to an orphanage at seven, to serve as his chief advisor. While Sister Mary urges Lenny to put aside dark memories and focus on leading his billion followers, the young pope shows no inclination towards making himself available, either to the College of Cardinals or to the masses.

Not really interested in the concept of this, but I have liked all of Sorrentino's movies, so I'll check it out just based on his work.

This received pretty good ratings when it aired last fall on Sky Italy so I'm not surprised a second season is already in development. Reviews were fairly positive, so I'm looking forward to check it out. Interesting choice by HBO to condense its season by airing it on b2b nights over 5 weeks.

Very disappointed in the first episode, all the characters have the same bland tone about them. No one stands out as being at all interesting.
I couldn't help but roll my eyes at Mole-man ordering people to start looking into the young pope's background for dirt and scandal. Like, isn't that something he would have done months ago, as soon as his name was even mentioned as a candidate?
I'll check out the second episode, but I don't think this show is going to be for me.

First ep was interesting enough, but no way this guy would be elected Pope.
But will see if i can keep up with this.

It has a very Italian art film aesthetic to it, which is to be expected I suppose. I'll give it a few more eps.
Why is it a "limited series" when it has 10 eps (the same number as any number of "full" series on HBO) and there will be a second season?

Since it's HBO, how long until this young pope wags his dick at the camera?

I read somewhere that they already asked for a second season.
Not sure how much control HBO has on it, since it's sharing credit with some european companies.

It's just not for me. My fiance loves it. Maybe one day I'll revisit it in a binge watching capacity. But right now, I just don't feel like watching it.

I love it. My wife likes it too.
It's not an American show. It's not an HBO show. If you watched something from the creator of the show, you know the style.
Although it's a very European show I think American viewers can enjoy the show too. In the last episode I was dying laughing when they were talking about Maradona, and soccer. My wife just looked at me like I was crazy.

There's a montage of Pius XIII Pope Lenny changing into his big Pope outfit to meet the cardinals, and the LMFAO song "Sexy and I Know It" plays. Its as bizarre and goofy as it sounds

Cartainly ended on a cliffhanger.
I enjoyed the series overall, I thought it improved as it went as long with episode 9 being the high point.
I can't say I've ever seen a series that visually, was as beautiful as this show was. The outside shots were gorgeous.

Re: The Young Pope (HBO) C: Paolo Sorrentino, S: Jude Law, Diane Keaton
It was really great. I was almost crying most of the episode.
Most religious people hated the show, but one Jesuit priest I follow in Facebook thought it was a great spiritual experience. I agree with him. It was a great spiritual experience for me.
Jude Law was great, and all the secondary characters were great too. Some looked like caricatures at the beginning of the show, but they were able to grow them.
Thought provoking is another great definition of the show.

Sequel series will be called "The New Pope" and will film early next year.
Sounds like it will be a new cast.

Just started watching this. It's a great looking show, Jude Law is a dick, but it is rather dull so far -- finished watching episode 2.

Re: The Young Pope (HBO) C: Paolo Sorrentino, S: Jude Law, Diane Keaton
Bought the first season for cheap, and I figured if Jude Law was going to take it, it would have a somewhat layered and deep meaning and that Sorrentino allowed Law to participate in his series for a reason. Was not disappointed. Rather harsh take on Catholics and The Vatican (they are separate, you know), but at the same rather honest, too. I like it, and have watched 7 episodes so far
Good to hear Sorrentino is writing AND directing the follow-up series. This means Sorrentino wants to continue his message.
American actors aside, Silvio Orlando, Javier Cámara, Cécile de France, and Ludivine Sagnier are some of the actors that are absolutely stellar in their performances and should be watched in other features they've been in.
