Who was Christoph Waltz supposed to play in The Hateful Eight?

Was watching The Hateful Eight and was trying to figure out who Christoph Waltz would have played. Does anyone know.

Waltz said that Tarantino offered him a part but he didn't want to do it. I can't quite figure out which role he would have played. I'm guessing that it the part would ultimately went to an actor who was not normally part of the regulars. So, I'm guessing it wasn't the Eric Roth, Michael Madsen or Sam Jackson roles.

The Kurt Russel (who I wouldn't consider a regular) role might be too close to the part he played in Django.

The Walton Goggins part seems like it should be played by a Southern and he seems too young to play the Bruce Dern part and too old to play the Channing Tatum part.

The part of Bob is too small for an actor of his stature.

Anyone have a good theory which part Tarantino wanted him for?

That was my first thought but then I remembered that Tarantino sent Tim Roth the script early on. So I figured he had him ear marked for the part of Oswaldo.

Just found this quote from The Observer: "Mr. Roth asserts the role of Oswaldo Mobray in The Hateful Eight was written specifically for him and not, some critics have written, Inglourious Basterds’ Christoph Waltz. And somehow that seems appropriate."

It may have been written for Roth but comparing Dr. King Schultz to Oswaldo Mabry, makes it less believable for me.

The Oswaldo part also seems pretty small. I realize that Waltz turned down the part because he didn't like it so maybe it was a smaller part. But it seems like he'd give Waltz one of the major parts...which are only Sam Jackson's, Kurt Russel's and Goggins. Of those, the Kurt Russel part seems the mostly likely. Although Russel was very good in it. But I wouldn't consider Russel one of his "players" and from what I gather Russel left Django.

I've only seen the movie once and I could've sworn he was in it. I'm picturing his character from Django in Hateful Eight.

If you were to ask me, I would have said Oswaldo as well. Then again, I'm like Timber and would have told you he was in it.

I could see him attempting the Dern or Tatum roles just to do something different. The Bob character was a bit weird, so I could see him doing that as well. Hell, maybe he was going to be Daisy Domergue! He's a great "chameleon" actor (Spectre withstanding) who could pull off just about anything.

It's perfectly obvious that Waltz was supposed to play Oswaldo.
Hell, Its obvious that Roth ended up playing Waltz playing Oswaldo.
No question.
Waltz is on record as not taking the role because it was too small...that further supports that it was the Oswaldo character.

Re: Who was Christoph Waltz supposed to play in The Hateful Eight?

This thread has reminded me not only of how great of an actor Christoph Waltz is, but also of how great and underappreciated Tim Roth is.

Ditto. And like others, if someone wouldn't have told me I would have said Waltz was in it.
Roth did a great Waltz, he was magnificent

Tim Roth should have a bigger career, that dude is amazing actor. Just to name a few : Little Odessa, Rob Roy, Gridlock'd, Hoodlum, Made in Britain, Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead.
I wish he would try his hand at directing again because the one and only time he did, we got the amazing and disturbing "The War Zone."

Roth was also great as Thade in the Burton's PotA. Best part of that movie, and makes it worth re-watching for me.

If there was any negative to Roth in Hateful, it was that is was essentially an impersonation of another actor playing another character. I saw and heard Waltz in every scene.

I agree with this. A few years ago when people were creaming their pants over Sean Penn being named "greatest actor", I always tried to mention Roth as an example of a superior actor.
