Spider-Man: Far From Home (7/2/2019, D: Watts)

Sony made the announcements on Friday. Sony has dated “Spider-Man: Homecoming 2” for July 5, 2019
Might as well start it now...

Scorpion and Mysterio for the sequel? That whole idea of stand alone movies for villains is a no starter. Very few of them could carry their own movie. As for the team up mate this time, Captain America maybe? I find most of the other MCU characters either too disposable to be team up types (Black Widow, Hawkeye, Falcon) or too specific to be added in to the Spiderman franchise (Thor, Hulk and Doctor Strange...the genres would not meld unless the Spidey villain reflected their genre i.e Rhino for Hulk, Mephisto for Strange etc).

Scorpion? Well..
Spoiler:
not sure if he died or not in the first film. And the only hint was a scorpion tattoo on Michael Mondo's neck.

I wouldn't mind Mysterio but they'd have to move away from the Chitauri tech weaponized baddies to at least introduce Oscorp.

re: Spider-Man: Far From Home (7/2/2019, D: Watts)

JULY 19, 2017 9:22am PT by Rebecca Ford, Borys Kit
'Spider-Man: Homecoming' Director in Talks to Return for Sequel (Exclusive)

Watts helmed Sony and Marvel's new take on Spidey, which has earned $467.3 million worldwide in two weeks.

After successfully relaunching the Spider-Man franchise with Spider-Man: Homecoming, Sony and Marvel are staying in business with director Jon Watts.

Watts is in talks to return for the sequel to the hit Spidey film, starring Tom Holland. The follow-up, currently untitled, is already slated for release on July 5, 2019.

Watts was best known for directing the $5 million indie Cop Car (2015), starring Kevin Bacon, but he successfully made the leap to big-budget tentpoles with Homecoming, getting the gig to co-write and direct the project after pitching a coming-of-age teen story focused on the high-school life of Peter Parker. The film, which also stars Michael Keaton, Zendaya, Robert Downey Jr. and Marisa Tomei, was deemed a box-office hit after it opened to $117 million domestically on July 7. It has earned $468.3 million worldwide in two weeks.

Holland will reprise his role as Peter Parker in the sequel. In Homecoming, Parker is a sophomore in high school trying to adjust to regular Brooklyn life after his adventures with the Avengers. The next film's story will pick up after the events of Avengers: Infinity War, which is set to hit theaters May 4, 2018, and will also feature Holland as Peter Parker/Spider-Man.

Along with Cop Car, Watts' helming credits include 2014 horror movie Clown and episodes of The Onion News Network. He is repped by CAA and Bloom Hergott.

According to Jeff Sneider on Meet the Movie Press show, Matt Damon passed on playing the villain.

Which villain would Damon have been?

I could see him playing Norman Osborn.

I would actually like to see them bring Osborn into the MCU as a heavy-hitter, and not just a Spider-Man villain, like they've recently done in the comics.

If it isn't Osborn and if they're wanting to stay away from the Maguire-Garfield villains, it might be Mysterio / Quentin Beck.

re: Spider-Man: Far From Home (7/2/2019, D: Watts)

For some dumb reason didn’t Marvel say they don’t want to use Osborn again as they don’t want to retread on characters that have been done or they feel like that character has been overused in the films? I mean granted he has but that’s Peter’s arch fucking nemesis. I’d love to see Osborn as a big baddie of the entire MCU as well.

Also I could see the hero cameo being Doctor Strange since he and Peter have a friendship in the comics. They could do Daredevil too if he was actually being incorporated into the MCU. Part of me wishes Daredevil would have been in the films rather than the Netflix shows.

I’d rather them wait a little bit longer on Osborn. They could introduce Norman and Harry, but I don’t want to see any Goblin again until atleast the third film.

This should start filming around June. Hopefully we start hearing more news soon.

Osborn will never be the big baddie of the entire MCU as long as Sony owns the character. Yes, there's an agreement in place between Marvel and Sony to use the characters in the MCU, but they wouldn't hinge their entire universe around a character that they don't own. At this point, there is no agreement to even use Spidey in the MCU past Homecoming 2.

Aren’t rumors floating around that Sony might be the next studio to liquidate? I don’t think Disney buys them as a whole but if that happens I bet they try to at least negotiate the rights to Spider-Man back.

I hadn't heard that, but there's probably a provision in the contract that the rights are not transferable to another studio, just like the X-Men and FF. If Fox is sold to another buyer besides Disney, the Marvel properties would revert to Marvel. I bet Spidey is the same deal

I've heard that Sony Pictures is in really bad shape, and may be sold.

Here's some speculation on the rights situation: https://marvelstudiosnews.com/2018/0...ony-ceo-steps/

I can remember the rights to Spiderman being passed around like a roofied sorority girl at a frat party until Sony and Raimi finally got a movie into production, so there may not be a reversion clause.

I've never heard that Fox would lose their Marvel properties if they ever got sold to another studio. So that means if somehow Comcast buys Fox instead of Disney that Disney would still get those rights back?

I can't seem to find it now, but when word first came out that Comcast may bid for Fox, I saw some articles that said that their license agreement does not allow it to be transferred in a sale, and if Fox was sold to another buyer, Disney would still get those properties back.

re: Spider-Man: Far From Home (7/2/2019, D: Watts)

I’ve always thought that would just make sense that in the case of a studio being sold the rights would revert back. The deals were for Fox and Sony respectively to make films not pass the film rights along to whoever bought them out if such a case arose. I would think there’s a clause that the rights wouldn’t be transferable to a third party without Marvel’s agreement since it still is their intellectual property at the end of the day. If there were clauses in the contracts that the studios had to have films in development after a certain point or the rights would go back I’d bet there’s others in there too.
