Spirited Away returns to theaters December 4 - 5

An absolute gem. Best animated film I've ever seen.

To celebrate its 15th anniversary, Studio Ghibli’s Academy Award-winning anime classic Spirited Away is returning to U.S. theaters this December, accompanied by an exclusive short film Ghiblies: Episode 2.

GKIDS and Fathtom Events are partnering up for the release, which will take in over 400 theaters nationwide and includes the dubbed version on Sunday, December 4th at 12.00pm, along with the English-language subtitled version on Monday, December 5th at 7pm. You can find a list of participating theaters here.

Also, Hayao Miyazaki is coming out of retirement for, like, the third time to direct "Boro The Caterpillar."

Spirited Away is the only Miyazaki film I've seen on the big screen. This was right after it won the Oscar for best animated feature. Only two people (including me) were in the theater. Haven't seen it since then.

Yeah, this one seems to have a pretty mixed reception on this forum, but it's my favorite of his. Absolutely brilliant from the first frame to last.

Sounds good to me. I had never seen a Miyazaki film until a couple years ago. I bought almost everything and with the wife and kids we had a Miyazaki summer film fest. We still have a few left overs to get to. Needless to say, we've never seen any in the theater so this would be great.

Best thing Miyazaki has ever produced.

I definitely recommend seeing his movies in the theater. Absolutely beautiful.

I want to see that, but I read that the English subtitles on the Japanese dub are incorrect. I have no idea if I'll see it or not.

I liked it well enough, just not as much as Mononoke or Totoro. I remember my father walking into the theater during the train scene (his showing of "Tears of the Sun" had just let out) and asking me what the hell I was watching.

The closest anniversary screening is an hour away and tickets are $13.25 for the matinee. I'd be better off just buying the BD. It's the only Miyazaki film I don't have in my collection, but only because I haven't found a good deal on it yet.

I think the DVD from Miramax has the correct subtitles, but the Disney BD does not. I own both, but I usually only watch the English dub. I'm not a purist in that regard.

Re: Spirited Away returns to theaters December 4 - 5

I've seen this 2 1/2 times theatrically, all 35mm screenins. First was the English dubbed version, the others were the Japanese prints with English subtitles. Why the 1/2? Well, at one screening the tweeker projectionist had spliced a reel in backwards. It was right after the stink spirit came into the bathhouse, which is my favorite sequence in the film.

I actually prefer Kiki and Castle in the Sky, and was fortunate enough to see them on 35 as well, with the original Japanese dialogue.

I remember seeing this at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood, I treated my brother in law to this film (he is the one in our family who is an anime nut) and I made sure to buy the VIP ticket package...it was a fun afternoon.

I've only seen the relatively recent ones in theaters: Howl's Moving Castle, Ponyo, Arietty, and The Wind Rises.

It's one of the few Miazaki movies we've seen in the theater, and it's one of my favorites. It's playing at two theaters within fifteen miles.

I think the only Miyazaki movies I HAVEN'T seen theatrically are Ponyo and Castle of Cagliostro. Three years ago there was a two week Ghibli showcase, all their movies on 35 and in Japanese. I mentioned some already, but during that event I also saw Nausicaa, Mononoke, Porco Rosso, Totoro, and even some non-Miyazaki titles like My Neighbors the Yamadas

Re: Spirited Away returns to theaters December 4 - 5

I've seen every Miyazaki feature in theaters. I took my daughter to three of them before she was 11 (LAPUTA: CASTLE IN THE SKY, CASTLE CAGLIOSTRO, MY NEIGHBOR TOTORO) and she accompanied me to three of the later ones as well, including two when she was in her 20's (HOWL'S MOVING CASTLE, PONYO).

My favorites, in this order: MONONOKE, TOTORO, KIKI'S DELIVERY SERVICE, CASTLE IN THE SKY, NAUSICAA.

This starts tomorrow, and it seems like there will be another English dubbed screening on Thursday, December 8th.

Looks like only one theater is going to have it, and a single showing at that. Also $13+ a ticket(no matinee pricing on this one). $52 for a family of 4 to see a movie I have sitting on my shelf? Pass.

Had the same issue with Iron Giant.
