I would advise that if you choose to put them in binders, do not throw away the packaging.
Selling loose DVDs on a spindle are worth about $2 a pound.

Me? I've eased off collecting. According to FilmAficionado, I have 1466 DVDs/Blus and I've watched barely a fraction of them and I'm 42 years old. We find ourselves watching stuff on streaming more often, and rarely pulling out a disc. I'm accepting that I've collected most of what I want and I'm letting go of the rest.

This guy has already had several discs damaged, apparently without getting rid of the cases! I'd hate to see how they'd fare in binders.

I went through this a couple of years back, doing all sorts of comparisons on space-saving options.
I'll say this for sure: I put all of my cd's 10 years ago in binders, and I recently discovered half of them are damaged beyond play-ability. And I hardly ever touched the binders.
I looked into discsox, which seem to have a good quality history, but you're looking at 50 cents per disc...that adds up quick.
As already mentioned, if you ever want to sell any of your collection, if there's no case and cover, you can pretty much forget it.
I finally just sucked it up and dedicated a 12 foot wall section to them, pared down to my "essentials", and try to maintain that size (though I will have to add another four feet fairly soon).
If you don't have $500 per 1000 discs to invest in discsox, and can't spare the space, I'd get a jumbo external drive, burn 'em, and sell 'em.
I'm sure many here will relate to why I ultimately kept them all: Movies are my thing. And when my friends and family visit, the first thing they do is check out the movie wall. It's my library. If you collect rare books, you would not have the same feeling about your collection if the whole thing was thrown on a kindle. Your friends are probably not going to ask to check out your computer to see your movies. I have yet to have someone want to discuss my itunes.

Some binders and/or sleeves will do a number on disc and some are very gentle on them. I have saw some leave a imprint on the disc that could not be cleaned off. I have some cheap hinged lid Innovera Cd/DVD storage boxes that hold 100, although the sleeves are flimsy they seem to be pretty good so far. Also anything stored on a hard drive should be backed up because hard drives eventually crash.
