I've only read the book (which was just ok) not seen the movie but it is definitely not a Harry Potter ripoff.

Yeah it's a misleading thread title, has a lot in common with X-men, not so much with Potter.

Nice drops for Storks, Sully and Don't Breath. Although not listed, Suicide Squad only dropped 39% at #11.

Bad Moms has quietly reached $112m, that's impressive

Anybody hear of this "prerelease criticism"? Why would that be an issue in a film of this type? Why would anyone even care? Besides, isn't Samuel L. Jackson in it? Isn't that "diverse" enough?
Had they cost half as much to make, their box office debuts would be considered marvelous. But with price tags of more than $100 million (before marketing costs), “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children” and “Deepwater Horizon” will have to fight to avoid going down as disappointments.
Mr. Burton needed the win. His last big-budget movie, “Dark Shadows,” was a box office misfire; his last outing as a producer, “Alice Through the Looking Glass,” was closer to a calamity. Still, “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children,” which drew prerelease criticism for its lack of cast diversity, will need to continue to draw large audiences in the weeks ahead to turn a profit.

The famed director acknowledged that diversity has become a popular discussion topic, but told editor Rachel Simon that “things either call for things, or they don’t.” He continued:
I remember back when I was a child watching “The Brady Bunch” and they started to get all politically correct, like, OK, let’s have an Asian child and a black — I used to get more offended by that than just — I grew up watching blaxploitation movies, right? And I said, that’s great. I didn’t go like, OK, there should be more white people in these movies.

I am just glad Deepwater Horizon finally came out so I don't have to watch that damned loud and obnoxious trailer anymore for it. It seems it was before every movie I have seen in the theater since December.

I believe it was one of several Relativity movies that's been sitting in the can for a long time while they underwent their financial issues.
IIRC, Netflix has the rights to their movies and wanted to release it straight to their service and there was some legal wranglings about it.
