I was never really into the older Westerns. Probably because they were before my time. Yes, I loved Shane and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, Butch Cassidy, but others have escaped me. Never got into John Wayne and some of his classics, but always have a soft spot for many that are made today...

Some of the ones that kicked off my love has to be:

Silverado (1985)
Tombstone (1993)

Those two really standout as older fare, but some of the newer fare have also really piqued my interests:

3:10 to Yuma (2007)
True Grit (2010)
Bone Tomahawk
Seraphim Falls
The Proposition
Open Range

So what are your favorite more modern-day Westerns?

Tombstone is one of my favorite movies period, regardless of genre. The Unforgiven is pretty good too. I would consider Django Unchained a bit of a western as well.

I've seen hundreds of westerns, including silent ones. It's my favorite genre. My favorite decade for westerns is the 1950s.

Of recent ones (last 25 years), I'd have to go with TOMBSTONE and the TRUE GRIT remake. Clint Eastwood's UNFORGIVEN is good as well. The new MAGNIFICENT SEVEN is up there also and one I'm sure I'll be re-watching soon. DJANGO UNCHAINED is in the same league, even though it's only partly a western.

In thinking about the latter, I just had a thought. What if Rhett Butler from GONE WITH THE WIND, after leaving Scarlett at the end, had gone out west with a freed slave and begun a career as a hired gun or bounty hunter? How great would that have been as a sequel? If only someone in Hollywood had thought of it when Gable was still around to do it. (Maybe they did and David O. Selznick had simply shot him down, calling it the dumbest idea he'd ever heard.)

Silverado is good too in its attempt to relive the glory days of the Hollywood Western.
Open Range and Wyatt Earp are both underrated; Costner deserves more credit for those

Lone Star - maybe I need to give this another try. Haven't seen it since it was in the theater; I wasn't impressed at the time.

Lone Star is great, but its setting is contemporary. It's a story of the modern west.

Except for the underused Dennis Quaid's excellent performance, I thought it was bad. Somewhere in those 3.5 hours there might be a decent 2 hour movie.
