So, today on the day "The Man Trap" aired 50 years ago for the first time--I went and watched Star Trek: The Motion Picture on the big screen!

Star Trek wasn't just a show for me, it was a life preserver through some very harrowing times in my teens and twenties. I was fortunate enough to get to meet Rod Roddenberry and express my gratitude to his father at the 50th Anniversary Star Trek Convention this last month.

Having been unaware of it when it first aired (but solidly into Lost in Space! ), I rewatched Man Trap last night, wondering how it came off to people seeing it for the first time 50 years ago. Just my way of celebrating.


I did begin watching during season 2 or 3, and have been a fan ever since.

I remember going to the Smithsonian during the 25th Annuversay and it being something of a big deal. I think they had an exhibit too. Probably helped TNG was at its height.

Despite some events, this 50th doesn't seem like such a big deal. I felt like the Doctor Who anniversary a few years back was bigger.

It's likely odd that I have not really seen the original Star Trek yet I have seen the movies (more than once) I have seen Star Trek - The Next Generation enough to where a screen shot is enough to know the episode. Seen Deep Space Nine more then once same with Voyager and some Enterprise episodes more then once yet I still have not gotten to the original series.

Me-TV celebrates 50th Anniversary of Star Trek



Classic TV network MeTV will boldly take viewers back in time with a three-hour event celebrating the 50th anniversary of the premiere of “Star Trek: The Original Series.”

At 9 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, the official series premiere episode “The Man Trap” will air. The rarely seen original pilot “The Cage” will follow at 10 p.m. Cult favorite host Svengoolie will be on hand to host the special “Sci Fi Saturday Night” programming block.

“The Man Trap” originally premiered on Sept. 8, 1966. With this premiere, Star Trek promised to take viewers on a five-year mission where no one had gone before. However, that mission almost ended before it began.

The Cage” takes place 13 years prior to James T. Kirk taking command of the USS Enterprise. It had a different Captain, Christopher Pike (Jeffrey Hunter), and with the exception of R. Spock (Leonard Nimoy) it had an entirely different crew and a very different feel. The network rejected this original version, and the episode did not air on television in its completed form until 1988.

“The Cage” was eventually replaced by “Where No Man Has Gone Before” — a second pilot that introduced the show as it would eventually air. But series creator Gene Roddenberry did something unusual — he inserted footage from the failed pilot into the show’s first season as flashbacks to an earlier time, ensuring that the original crew would live on as part of Trek universe.

The digital subchannel Heroes & Icons (H&I) shows all six Star Trek series: the original, Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, Enterprise, and the animated series from the mid-70's.

For a man who's 85 years old and maybe 30-40 pounds overweight, he looks pretty damn good for his age.

My parents were just married when Star Trek debuted. My mom said they would set up TV trays in their apartment living room and watch it during dinner.

I watched The Cage last night. It's been awhile since I saw it incorporated in The Menagerie but I remembered it pretty well. It was interesting seeing what was refined and kept from the pilot.

We had a black and white TV and I went to bed early, so I missed some of the early Star Trek. One night we were at a relatives and it was on in all it's glorious technicolor. My parents let me watch it after that and I was hooked.
