Happy 50th Star Trek!
I realize there is at least one thread elsewhere on the TOS anniversary, but figured with the huge comic book history it might warrant some discussion here.
I plan to read some Star Trek original crew comics today, to celebrate. The question is: do I read the old Gold Key stuff, the Marvel, the DC, (was there original crew Malibu?), or finally try the new John Byrne stuff?

Re: Happy 50th Star Trek!
My single issues of everything are buried in a room where it would take me a couple hours to dig anything at all out, so that leaves out a lot of my choices.
I did find my Checker Publishing collections of the original Star Trek comics, the Western/Gold Key books that began in 1967. I've only read one issue so far; it was hokey but fun.
I can't find my Debt of Honor graphic novel, which would have been a good read today iirc.
Found some old DC collections including a Year Four book and a best of Peter David.
I'll try to read at least one of these newfangled John Byrne books tonight too.
Oh, and maybe the Star Trek/Planet of the Apes crossover?

I forgot I still have one of those Gitcorp sets. I never liked the desktop experience but should try to get those (also Marvel and Archie) onto my tablet.

The Gold Key stuff is bizarre. It was obviously created by people who had never seen the show, and were only given a few publicity shots and maybe a writers' bible to go on. It's not particularly accurate to the television show, but it also captured a certain sci-fi oddness from its zeitgeist.
The DC stuff is fairly standard Star Trek material; a few good stories and healthy amount mediocrity.
I think Malibu only had the license for Deep Space Nine back when it first came out in '93 or so.
Marvel had Trek for a second time in the mid-90s. I remember liking the Early Voyages series they did with Captain Pike and his crew, and the Starfleet Academy series with Nog was something different.

Just read the first Gold Key issue yesterday, crazy stuff. Spoiler, but the first issue ends with Kirk deciding to vaporize the life on an entire planet! The inconsistencies are interesting, and I'm not sure your theory of them only having publicity shots is accurate. The comics came out about a year after the series premiered, and I don't imagine Gold Key's lead times were that long. The creative teams should have been able to see the actual show.
