Fear the Walking Dead (S2E08) -- Mid-Season Premiere -- "Grotesque" -- 8/21/16

AMC's fan favorite original series "Fear the Walking Dead" returns for the second half of season two on Sunday, August 21st at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT. The first half of the second season averaged 7.8 million viewers per episode, including 5.1 million adults 25-54 in Nielsen live+7 ratings and solidified "Fear" as a top drama on cable.

In the mid-season premiere episode, "Grotesque," written by Kate Barnow and directed by Dan Sackheim, Nick's steadfast search for answers leads him into a deadly dog-eat-dog landscape. A dark piece of his past is uncovered.

Then, viewers can catch a new episode of the live after-show "Talking Dead" hosted by Chris Hardwick joined by "Fear The Walking Dead" stars Danay Garcia and Kim Dickens with Showrunner Dave Erickson at 10:01 p.m. ET/PT.

As we embark on the second half of the second season of "Fear the Walking Dead," the Clark/Manawa, Salazar and Strand families fracture. The events that took place at the Abigail compound have set all of our heroes adrift. Now they must forge their own paths to survive. Alicia struggles with Madison's refusal to let Nick go, while Travis tries to protect Chris from the apocalyptic darkness that threatens to consume him. Strand is lost in grief, and the power of Daniel's dark past leaves Ofelia disillusioned about their survival and ability to rebuild new lives.

I SWORE I was done after that shit finale, but... fuck it. I'll give them another chance to turn things around, only because most of my other shows haven't started back yet.

I wonder if the after show is truly live. Chris Hardwick just got married yesterday. If it is live, his wife is very nice.

Half an hour in, and it's more like "Bore the Walking Dead."

I actually liked it ok, but Nick actually became my favorite character this year after being annoying in season 1. Luciana seems like a promising new character.

I'd actually be perfectly fine if the other character are never re-visited.

On other thought, and this applies to most of the post-apocalyptic tv shows, movies, and books I've experienced. Why the F don't people actually utilize bicycles more? I swear I'm gonna make this a plot point if/when I finish my own PA novel.

One of the better episodes of the entire show. Probably a lot to do with Nick being the only one featured (outside of flashbacks at least).

Really boring episode. I don't like it when this show or TWD devotes a whole episode to just 1-2 characters, especially after a 3-month hiatus.

I'm not a regular basher of the show, but I will say the scene with the shooters on the road (I'm not sure what to call them) was badly staged. The one shooter's shock at seeing Nick seemed over-played and there's really no reason for them to have been overtaken by the dead. It was interesting seeing one of the producers on "Talking Dead" trying to back-pedal and explain the scene.

That scene reminded me of this:

A long term complaint and I can only assume the fear is that it would eliminate too much potential drama if characters made use of this simple and amazingly useful tool. Casually pedaling a bicycle would put a mile between you and a herd of walkers in a mater of a few minutes at a cost of about 10 calories burned.

I think your last point is really what sticks with me. It wouldn't surprise me if this episode would have been slightly better received if it wasn't the first one back.

My Sunday night TV group has some Fear apologists, and even they were disappointed with this episode.

Recording and watching when I can. Still glad I'm not setting aside any time on Sunday night for this.

Why are they apologizing? Has there been some good episodes that I missed that made this one a disappointment? They've all sucked so far. This one was okay. Not great. Not good. But okay. Which makes it the best episode in the run of the show.

When someone is swinging a bat at you, you just avoid a swing and wrap them up. Nick is a pansy but he easily could have overpowered that woman.

This one, while totally average at best, was definitely better than pretty much any episode last season. Wish they would just ditch/kill off the others.

I bailed on this show last spring, but one of my co-workers (who is a big Fear of the Walking Dead Defender) even said it was a terrible episode.

I don't know, I've seen a few people get jammed up trying to get away from someone on a bike.

I didn't mind this episode. I thought it brought some interesting back story to Nick.

I did at those 2 stupid Mexican guys with the guns who got overrun by the walkers and got eaten while Nick was limping along in that group. Why the fuck did those guys stand around like idiots and re-load?

They are apologists meaning they usually defend the show and the individual episodes. They didn't do much defending this week.

I don't understand why Nick would just give up his supplies (especially his water) when he knew he needed to walk through the desert?
