Please read: here is the letter I emailed them.

Here is the first part of the Story: When i ordered The Scream Trilogy, my gift certificate account was more than the price of the set, and on top of
that I wanted to use the Harrypotter coupon, which I did. When my order was finished, the total was around $50 paid by gift certificates. (price of the
set with $10 off)
A few weeks later, when I checked the status of this order, the use of the coupon had disappeared and I was now being charged $10!!!!!!!
I enquired and wrote to you and got this reply:

"Wed 30 August;
Thank you for writing to us at Amazon.com.

Having researched your account, I found that your remaining gift
certificate funds total $70.09. As a goodwill gesture I have reduced
your shipping charge by $1.00 in an effort to ship your order once the
item is released. As listed on our site, it is currently scheduled to
be released on September 26th, 2000.

We will send an e-mail confirmation at the time of shipment.

Please note that the "HARRYPTTRSPC" claim code expired on August 1st
and is no longer valid. I'm sorry you weren't able to use your gift
certificate before it expired. Our promotional gift certificates
function much like a coupon in a physical store. They are sometimes
limited to certain products and are valid only for the length of the
promotion.

I hope you will be able to take advantage of our future promotions.
Please don't hesitate to contact us should you have any further
questions or concerns.
Best regards,

Stacy E.

Well, I was surprised for the coupon story but didn't complain...Indeed, I had just acquired a new $10 Gift certificate. So I lost Both the $10 Coupon and $10
more. But please, note that I knew that the coupon expired August 1...My order had been placed July 17!!!(Just check my account for confirmation!)
Today, having not receiced any email saying my order had shipped, I discover that not only hasn't it shipped, but I am now being charged $1......the one you
supposedly offered to me a fw weeks ago.......
As I understand Amazon is doing different pricing according to customer etc, I now understand that you must have cancelled my coupon after having seen that I
had a high balance of gift certificate and "didn't need it", and you have just cancelled your "goodwill gesture" as my balance is now about $30...

THIS IS TOTALLY INACCEPTABLE!!!!!!!!!!!
Even though I live in France i am well aware of AMAZON pricing policy and of the problem you encountered a few days ago for charging different people different
prices for the same products....... Well..how about coupon using cancellation after an order is placed??????????
On top of this, my order has not shipped yet? (Release date was september 26.)
I am now asking you to refund me the $10 coupon I was eligible to use and HAD used.......and to ship my order as soon as possible without , of course charging me
for $1.

regards
sj

Is there some specific reason why every little individual issue with Amazon is becoming its own thread in the Bargains forum?

I lost track of the problem somewhere in the middle of your explanation, but you should really call/e-mail customer support. We can't help you here...

Edited to add:

I just noticed your "PS: copy sent to DVDtalk.com". You're CC:-ing a Bargain discussion group on your Amazon customer service correspondence? What a strange thing to do...

I'm still not clear what your issue is (or how you lost $20). I understand that they apparently removed your HarryPotter coupon from your order. You should certainly complain about this and get it reinstated, but it is hardly "policy news". My HP coupon was used on THE OMEN which didn't ship until the beginning of September but the coupon was deducted no problem.

I don't understand the rest of what you are saying though... how did you lose an additional $10GC? Why are you complaining that a Sept. 26th release hasn't shipped when it is only the 28th? And what does dynamic pricing have to do with this?

Your profile says Tacoma, WA. Which is it?
I had a pre-order with Harry Potter that was just released. So, they shouldn't have ripped it away.

I had a pre-order with the Harry Potter coupon. It was just fine in the order status, even after the expiration date.

But then I had to go into the order and change the billing information. After having me re-enter all my credit card information, I guess it recalculates the totals, and since it was past the expiration date, the Harry Potter promotional coupon disappeared. I called customer service, and they were very nice, and said they would take $10 off my order. No problems.

i was wondering the same thing. why would someone lie and say that they lived in tacoma (aroma) washington? ugh.

seems more to me like he wasn't being completely honest about living in france, and didn't realize that little fib would reveal itself when he made his self righteous post...

nice bargain btw!

Tacoma??? Tacoma??? Eclipse passes thru Tacoma on nearly a daily basis and is nearly ashamed of that alone! Eclipse had to go to a wedding last weekend in Tacoma and wasn't too happy about that!

better yet the wedding was off of south tacoma way! I forget what the neighborhood was called, I think it started with an "M" or something...the whole theme of the wedding was "at least its not Vegas"

Oh heck no! Not just you... Ohhh.. I'll give up DVDs for a few months to stay there for a week....... Ahhh... Mmmmm..

Oops. Don't they require umbrellas for veils in Tacoma. Or do they schedule all the weddings during those three days when it doesn't rain.

bboisvert, re: your remark "You're CC:-ing a Bargain discussion group on your Amazon customer service correspondence? What a strange thing to do..." I believe your sarcasm is unwarranted. For your information, in devede2000's letter to Amazon, he wrote "PS: copy sent to DVDtalk.com". He did not write PS: copy sent to the Bargain Forum of DVDTalk. I'm assuming, bboisvert, that you realise that there is more than one forum here at DVDTalk. Maybe he posted in the wrong forum, but there's nothing "strange" about telling Amazon that you are a user of DVDTalk.

As for suomynona, I don't believe it says anywhere on DVDTalk's registration that you have to be truthful in where you say you live. Mine says Santa Clara, but for months it still said NYC, which was my previous address. Lots of other people's usernames say they're from Planet Earth or something of that sort. Are you calling them liars too?

I think everyone is just too eager to jump all over someone else. This person wasn't extolling the virtues of Amazon and demanding we give Amazon the brass ring. And you can see it's a new user so give him a break for chrissakes.

To the BUNCH of idiots who said anything except things related to my problem:
I am French, I am a French citizen, but I spent 10 months in Tacoma as a teaching assistant in a middle and high school 2 yeras ago.
As this Forum is, I guess, " American Owned and Operated " :-) , and as I have friends and good memories linked to Tacoma, I just registered as a Tacoma inhabitant....
BUT, you fools, this has nothing to do with my point, and Amazon has never heard of Tacoma...I live in France and they ship my DVDs here.
Thanks a lot to Noellyge for supporting.

But could anyone tell me if this is acceptable? I used the $10 coupon and Amazon cancelled it!!!!

I see it like this, the Harrypotter coupon was meant to be used on books if I recall, not DVD's, that was a slack in Amazon's part. Next, you PRE-ORDERED the DVD, which means you were not in actuallity billed for it yet (yes, your GC balance reflected the deduction, but if you cancelled, it would have been restored). The GC expired BEFORE the ship date, thus when the system attempted to finallize the transaction, you came up 10 bucks short.

Would I complain? Definitely. The system should not allowed you to used the HP coupon for an order that was to ship AFTER it's exp date.

Call CS and BITCH loudly, ask for a Order Specialist and bitch somemore. Doing it here isn't going to get you anywhere.

Yes, it is unacceptable that everytime a change is made to an existing order, the order clock is reset to present time, thus rendering your coupon invalid. Happened to me, called CS and got the credit for it after an exhausting discussion/explanation/argument. I don't ever want to go through that again. Personally, I don't think the system is meant to be this way. More likely, it is a glitch. Amazon better fixes it soon. In the mean time, don't make any change to any existing order with a coupon!

I've cancelled a coupon with a promo gc in it and it worked once after the expiration date (I was holding my breath) and one before the expiration date. So I guess I was lucky.

The common sense approach is not to do it and see if an order specialist will do the switch over for you.

Hey devede2000, this is unacceptable. I live in the UK and used my HarryPotter coupon to order the Jurassic Park twin pack. This doesn't ship until October 10 and my order page still shows the coupon as being valid. If you made your original 'unchanged' order before the HarryPotter coupon had expired, then amazon should not have cancelled it on this order!

I would keep flooding them with e-mail explaining this until someone there finally gives in!!

...by the way, at the time of making the order, did you have any other GC's already in your account? If the answer is yes, then I believe that amazon uses any GC's in your account before any new ones added at the time of order... ...make any sense?

Got to the end of the thread and now I can't remember...

Are we bitching about Amazon customer service (or lack thereof), about people who post for every little problem (expecting someone here to help clear it), or Tacoma or France?

Damn, I hate when that happens!
