Don't Breathe (2016, Alvarez) S: Lang, Levy, Minnette

A group of friends break into the house of a wealthy blind man, thinking they'll get away with the perfect heist. They're wrong.

New RED BAND trailer

I thought there was a thread for this, but I guess not.

Avoid the red-band trailer - as it seems to absolutely ruin the entire film.

I thought the red band trailer was okay, the movie looks good. A horror movie based on an original idea, I didn't know that was still possible today.

Haven't watched it but could it be a red herring?

Based upon the premise of the film, the initial trailer, and what is shown in the red-band, I don't think so.

Spoiler:
They clearly show a bloody and bruised Levy running away from the house

There was a movie earlier this year called Hush. A deaf woman has to deal with a home invasion.

Saw the trailer attached to a few films I saw in the theater this year.

Looks interesting. I'll probably see it.

Not bad. Also glad it's a true R rated horror movie and not the watered down PG-13 shit...

I just got home from an advanced screening, all I will say is the Red Band trailer is fine, it doesn't give away the whole movie, and its only part of the story. Everyone here should like it.

Hush is fantastic. It might still be on Netfix. Highly recommended.

I hope everyone here goes and sees it this weekend. I will probably go back and watch it out for a second time, very good second film from Fede Alvarez.

Really good flick. Reminded me a little of Halloween II to be honest. They both built tension in a similar way. And the fact that both villains had a hinderence of sorts. I dug it. It also took a few minutes for it to hit me that the lead girl in this was also the lead in Evil Dead. The hair color change threw me off.

Re: Don't Breathe (2016, Alvarez) S: Lang, Levy, Minnette

Can we get Lang as Cable now? Thanks.

Stripped down to the basics, Don’t Breathe is a mean and lean thriller, focused entirely on things literally going bump in the night. Director Fede Alvarez follows up his solid Evil Dead remake with a frightful home invasion tale where the home owner quickly turns the tables on the robbers. The results allow for edge-of-your-seat entertainment, begging the audience to be just as quiet as the potential victims, lest they be discovered and beaten down.

Going to see this on Tuesday morning. Looking really forward to it. I feel like I've been seeing the trailer attached to everything for the past few months.

Though I know Stephen Lang from Public Enemies and Avatar, I couldn't believe it was the same guy who played the slimy reporter in Manhunter.

Once we first enter the blind man's room, the film just never lets up. And as fine as the direction is, the sound/score is what's really the champ here.

There were numerous shots where she looked like Reese Witherspoon. It got distracting at times. Bring back the dark hair!

Re: Don't Breathe (2016, Alvarez) S: Lang, Levy, Minnette

I was totally enjoying the hell out of this movie until that one scene - added NOTHING to the movie IMO and was just gross - Lang's character was already evil enough and if you chopped that 3 minutes out, the movie would be no worse for wear...struck me as Alvarez and Co. just trying to push buttons but not in a good way. A damn shame because up to that point it was a masterclass in suspense - great shot composition, atmosphere and use of sound. The finale was fine but that one bit really took me out and stretched credibility way too far for me (Really, NOW is the time to do this?! He wouldn't have even waited a few hours!?). Worth seeing but man I wish they had changed their mind about that one part...

Saw it. FWIW, I thought that one part was what kind of gave the movie a nice twist and distinguished it fromanother bad guy on the loose in a house thriller. Not saying it still didn't have me wanting to , but I felt it worked.
Given this movie and Evil Dead, I am curious as to what other horrible things this crew can do to Jane Levy .

Re: Don't Breathe (2016, Alvarez) S: Lang, Levy, Minnette

Dude, do you have to start every single review of yours with "Saw it." I'm sorry but that's just irritating, you do it every time. We KNOW you saw it, you're giving your opinion about it.

Anyway, I thought this was alright. I thought there was alot of tense moments where you're gripping your armrests. But a few things annoyed me...I'll spoilerize since this isn't an official review thread.

Spoiler:
-first, I think it would be really easy for these people to get caught with their scheme. Wouldn't the police be suspicious that shortly before the burglary occurred, the alarm system had been disarmed via code, then armed again just before a window or door was broken? That would lead the police to realizing all the houses under this one security company are being broken into, etc etc.

-opening the movie with Stephen Lang's character dragging the blonde down the street was a bad idea. Yea, the guys were probably going to die (especially corn rows guy), but it still gave it away right off the bat that they weren't going to make it. Ruins some of the tension.

-man, they really went over the top with the kidnapping and raping of the rich woman. That was fucked up. Not that I was offended by it, but it just made the blind guy more evil than he needed to be.

-finally, at the very end, when the girl escapes the car with the dog locked inside...where is the dog after Lang knocks her out and brings her back to the house? Still in the car? They should have added a 5 second scene of Lang putting the dog back in the backyard or something, or had the dog bark to indicate that he had been brought back with him. I don't know, kinda annoyed me.

Still, overall, it was a breezy 90 minutes and was entertaining for the most part.

Give it a B-
