When did you give up on the Highlander franchise?
So the Highlander franchise. One great movie that's a classic. One movie that's a disaster. One movie that is less of a disaster but still a disaster. One movie that's ok mainly due to some good fight choreography. And one that needs to be burned and never mentioned. So when did you give up on it? I actually stuck through all the movies and somewhat regret that decision.
Highlander: Classic. Lambert and Brown's iconic roles. Great soundtrack, great story and great direction. 5/5
Highlander 2:Yeah this is a disaster. 1/5
Highlander 3: Better than part 2 but still awful. Van Peebles is way over the top, giving him magic powers is goofy as well. Unger is hot however.
Highlander 4: Not in continuity with the other movies but Lambert is still good and Adrian Paul is a good lead. Also has the best sword fights of the movies but Bruce Payne is way over the top. 3/5
Highlander: The Source: Kill it with fire. 0/5

Endgame was one of the worst movies I ever saw theatrically, so I'd say absolute out on that one.

I saw 2 in the theater, and I lost interest in the movie franchise with that.
The TV show was consistently pretty good, though.

I've seen them all. The Source never should have been made. It was beyond terrible. Can't believe Bill Panzer, who produced the series, thought that was a good script. Sad that he left this world after it was released.
I enjoyed Endgame. It was a good tie in for the series and movies and ended with a good amount of closure. I'm going to pretend The Source never happened.

I stopped after 3. I actually think 2 is better than 3. At least 2 tries to do something new. 3 was a note-for-note remake of 1, and not very imaginative about it.

Highlander is one of those guilty pleasure movies that should have just stopped at the original movie. Similar to the Crow or Underworld series. They just get progressively worse, eroding the fanbase and killing whatever magic the original had in the process.
Highlander: Great
Highlander 2: Awful
Highlander 3: Okay
Highlander: Endgame: Decent but forgettable
Qualifier: I haven't watched any of them in at least a decade, and never saw the last one.

I must have only seen the Renegade version of 2, I don't remember it being that bad. I was never a big fan of the series. My favorite thing about the original was the music from Queen. The original would have sucked without it. The latest one I've seen is 3, but don't remember anything about it. I'd even know about the last two. Are any of the latest ones on Netflix/Hulu/Amazon Prime?

There can be only one, and that is the first one.

I don't think I've ever seen 3. I did see Endgame when it came out but didn't feel a need to see it again. Haven't seen The Source.
I have a soft spot for 2. Yeah it's awful but I love Michael Ironside.

Excellent thread. I love the franchise. I would have to say that after the last season of the TV show and Endgame. I refuse to watch The Source. I recently acquired Highlander III: The Sorcerer on BD from Germany and it's damn good all things considered. I also liked the anime. I have a friend that was Bill Panzer and Peter S. Davis's personal assistant. It was a short stint and he didn't even know that Panzer had died.

I did a double take with the subtitle The Sorcerer, because I could have swore the third movie was called The Final Dimension, but it's just a case of the title being changed later (and makes more sense than The Final Dimesion).

Re: When did you give up on the Highlander franchise?
Yeah, here in the states it was called "The Final Dimension" and it was released in a PG-13 version. On VHS and DVD its was subsequently released in the R-rated cut but the German cut has different shots/inserts. I know the Japanese BD also has more special features but I don't know about the final cut on that one. From what i hear, the Japanese BD is the best copy to get but the price is too cost prohibitive.

Best HIGHLANDER film:
Directed by Yoshiaki Kawajiri, who also gave us WICKED CITY, NINJA SCROLL and VAMPIRE HUNTER D: BLOODLUST.

All of the sequels were terrible. 3 is probably the least terrible but thats not saying much.

Re: When did you give up on the Highlander franchise?
It was one of the most pathetic movies I've seen in the theater - just a step up from Never Too Young To Die. No, on second though, not a full step up - just a half step up, maybe only a quarter step. It was awful.
I never got into the series, and after watching Endgame I didn't want to.
Highlander begins and ends with the original movie as far as I'm concerned. Everything else just ruins it.
Yep. It's OK, but not very good - and it's totally unnecessary given the ending of the first movie. There was absolutely ZERO room for a sequel after the first movie. A prequel? Maybe, but not a sequel. It really should have just been left alone...

Re: When did you give up on the Highlander franchise?
I saw 2 in the theater and a friend that had previously seen it insisted it was like the best movie ever. Afterward he apologized and attributed his stellar review as a result of being on acid at the time. I remember 3 being out and some friends discussing it but I really didn't have any interest at that point. I still have not seen it.

Didn't like the first one so it ended there.
A Scottish actor playing an Egyptian prince with a Spanish name and a French actor playing a Scotsman did make me laugh.

Re: When did you give up on the Highlander franchise?
Saw the first one and thought it was fantastic (loved some of the creative scene transitions that director Russell Mulcahy did).
Part 2 was just so goddamn awful and couldn't believe it was made by the same team that did the original. Gave up after the very horrendous sequel.
