Splash (remake)

Disney is moving forward on a remake of the 1984 film Splash with an interesting twist: Channing Tatum will star as the mermaid character that was played by Daryl Hannah while Jillian Bell will play the character originally played by Tom Hanks.

Imagine’s Ron Howard and Brian Grazer will produce along with Tatum, Reid Carolin and Peter Kieran via his Free Association banner. Anna Culp will executive produce.

The 1984 original starred Hanks as a man who as a young boy was saved from drowning by a mermaid (Hannah). The mermaid returns 20 years later and finds the boy she once saved, and gives him the option between his life on land or a life under the sea with her.

Marja-Lewis Ryan will write the script. She is currently writing Free Association's HBO College pilot Unsupervised. Free Association is also producing her Netflix film 6 Balloons which she has written and will direct. She also wrote Lean In based on Sheryl Sandberg's book for Tristar. She's repped by UTA.

Tatum and Bell previously worked together on 22 Jump Street. Tatum, recently seen in Hail, Caesar!, will next be seen in Kingsman: The Golden Circle. He’s repped by UTA, Management 360 and Hansen, Jacobson.

Bell will be seen soon in Office Christmas Party, and Fist Fight. She’s repped by UTA, 3 Arts Entertainment and Stone, Genow.

I like Tatum, but the mental picture of Tatum rocking a fish tail is just bad. I mean, if they chose to go that route
Spoiler:

Wonder whose directing.

They are introducing a talking whale as a new character, so she has already been cast

You've got to be kidding me?

Hollywood is absolutely out of their mind, and out of control.

Someone needs to put a stop this this ridiculousness.

So we get yet another remake with gimmick casting? Are there no original ideas left in Hollywood?

Wonder what other movies that came out in 1984 they'll remake and gender-swap the roles?

Beverly Hills Cop?
Romancing the Stone?

Everyone better be careful or we'll all be accused of being sexist. Oh wait, we're just against a white guy being cast as a mermaid so that won't happen.

Because Tom Hanks was so mind-blowingly beautiful in the original?

Seriously. It's a story about someone falling in love with someone that is out of their league who happens to be a mermaid.
