I don't know what to make of all the promos, but I'm going to DVR the pilot and give it a shot. Needless to say I'm not familiar with the comic.

I give it a B-
Cassidy stole the show, and Dominic wasn't bad as Jessie. Didn't really like Tulip much.
I get the feeling the show is going to focus on weird townspeople stuff rather than road trip searching for God like the comic.
I will keep watching since Preacher is one of my favs.

It was decent... Not too much like the comic but that's ok as long as it's entertaining which it was for the most part. I'll stick with it and see where it goes.

I knew I wouldn't like the casting of Tulip - hate it when I'm right.
Otherwise, not bad - good thing I wasn't expecting it to be like the comic. Will keep watching... for now.

Without having read the comics, I don't know what I would have thought of this pilot. The flashy direction was a distraction.
I think two of the three leads have been wrongly cast. While I think Dominic Cooper is a fine actor, he's a smooth British actor that wouldn't know Texas if it punched him in the face. Ruth Negga doesn't really work as Tulip and I wonder about her chemistry with Cooper. I'll give them a pass on Cassidy.
The facial prosthetic for Arseface could have been more detailed.

As for Arseface, I'm not sure why they bothered to give him subtitles. He was perfectly understandable. Do not like.

I was disappointed they made him so understandable. I'll agree those subs were unnecessary. Half of the fun with that character in the comics was figuring out what he was trying to say.

Would love to hear an opinion from someone who hasn't read the comics. If they felt completely lost, or if it progressed well for them.
I liked it overall - cassidy was great, Jesse was pretty good. Definitely interested to see how it plays out. Agree that arseface was both too understandable and not grotesque enough.

Yeah, the comics were much more wry, serious, and dour. This had a lot of humor. Cassidy is jarring, because he was based off of Billy Idol in the comics.
I'm still gonna stay the course. I thought the Tom Cruise joke about him exploding on stage was hilarious.
Oh, here's the original concept make-up for Arseface they used but then quickly changed it to something less "grotesque."

Loved the comics, read them issue by issue when the series first came out. And I am totally ready to let go of them to enjoy this series.
But holy crap, that was just CLUNKY.
These characters really need to POP off the screen; instead I will agree that Tulip and Custer seem miscast. Negga is giving it her all as Tulip, but she's not really selling it. You can see the seams in her performance. Tulip doesn't seem to have that balance of sass, grit. and uncertainty; instead we have 1-note smug "badassery". Custer was melancholic and brooding from beginning to end. Sure we got the "kickass" bar fight, but nothing led up to it in a way that made it seem compelling. It just happened because it needed to happen. Yawn.
Cassidy was OK. I hope they tone down the manic mumbling by the actor.
Otherwise, the tone was wildly uneven. I loved the absurd touches, like the "Outer Space" opening and Tom Cruise exploding, plus the brief shocking moments of violence and gore, but other than that it was played straight and flat, and I found myself not caring one whit about the town or the folks that resided there.
If Custer had one more understated, barely audible conversation with a soccer mom in a diner/minivan/picnic, I was going to kick a pigeon.
Anyway, a solid C from me. I think these problems can be improved but they need to be improved quickly. My wife watched with me, and had no familiarity with the comic at all. She was into Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, Daredevil, Jessica Jones, etc. from episode 1. She did not care for Preacher at all. I told her to give it a few more episodes, that it was going somewhere, that if it hit the beats of the comics storyline it would be something she'd be into, etc.
But I could see people giving up on this quickly otherwise.

No knowledge of the comics here. I didn't hate it, but I didn't love it, either. I worry that the 'over-the-top-ness' of this is going to wear thin for me over a whole season.

Opening scene hooked me, but after that it kind of dragged and it definitely felt clunky. I'm definitely looking forward to more episodes though. I've never read the comic, but after all the Arseface discussion, I'm disappointed in his makeup.

Not read the comics and I was sorta lost though out. But I'll give it a few more episodes and see if I like it once they start putting things together.

Man, it's still really weird that on a lot of shows/movies (including this one) never specify beyond "Africa". No country, no region, just the entire fucking continent. Never happens for Europe or Asia.
The comics had a shitload of humor. Starr's situations, dealing with incompetent subordinates, Quincannon's ridiculousness, tons of Cassidy interactions, that stupid actor with Jodie and T.C., among a lot more.

Wonder if people are going to think Jesse and his Word of God is derivative of Kilgrave in jessica Jones...

Did it? I actually own the entire series but haven't read them all in more than 10-15 years. Fuck, I was still in high school when that series debuted. I don't remember humor outside of Cassidy.

Also, I know it's his acting persona, but I can't stop picturing Seth Rogen doing his giggle/laugh while coughing on bong hits and yelling "Action" behind the camera.

I read al the comics when they originally came out and for me it's the greatest series ever written. The comics had tonnes of very dark humor and it was fantastic. The first episode has captured beats, but I can see that it's no where near a direct interpretation. I thought they might try and set things up using the first season and go with comic stories and characters in future seasons. I have no problem with Cooper as Jesse, and the guy playing Cassidy is spot on. Tulip is not working for me, and I agree the original makeup for Arseface is far superior.
I am in, just hope it gets more along the comic lines sooner rather than later. The Saint of Killers needs to show up this season. Starr soon thereafter
