The Path (Hulu) -- EP: Jason Katims, S: Aaron Paul, Michelle Monaghan, Hugh Darcy
Hulu has released a trailer for their original series The Path, which will premiere on the online streaming service on March 30th, 2016. From executive producer Jason Katims (creator of Friday Night Lights and Parenthood) comes a drama about “a family at the center of a controversial cult movement as they struggle with relationships, faith, and power.” The 10-episode series stars Aaron Paul, Michelle Monaghan and Hugh Dancy. Watch The Path trailer embedded after the jump.
As a fan of both Parenthood and Friday Night Lights, they had my attention with Jason Katims’ involvement. But this series looks unlike his other television projects. This television series looks darker and less relatable, which makes me curious how involved he was in the development. Either way, I like the actors involved and will definitely give this new series a chance when it debuts at the end of March.
Hulu has said that each episode will take an “in-depth look at the gravitational pull of belief and what it means to choose between the life we live and the life we want.” The new series was created by Jessica Goldberg, who was a writer/producer on Parenthood and Camp. She will executive produce the series, along with Katims and Michelle Lee of True Jack Productions.
Here is the official synopsis for The Path:
To Belong You Must Believe. We all want to believe in something, but to what lengths will we go to find meaning? The Path explores the unknown and mysterious world of the cult-like Meyerist Movement in upstate New York. At the center of the movement lies Eddie (Aaron Paul), a conflicted husband; Sarah (Michelle Monaghan), his devoted wife; and Cal (Hugh Dancy), an ambitious leader. We follow each as they contend with deep issues involving relationships, faith, and power. The series takes an in-depth look at the gravitational pull of belief and what it means to choose between the life we live and the life we want.

It's got one heck of a pedigree with that cast and showrunner. I think I'm gonna give it a try.

I'll watch whatever show Jason Katims puts out. Solid cast; reminds me of The Leftovers.

I get a Big Love kind of feeling from that trailer.
I'd watch it, but Hulu rules it out.

Aaron Paul, like Michael Imperioli before him, has been having trouble finding the right venue after Breaking Bad. His first attempt, a Fast and Furious knock off was a bad choice for which his agent should have been fired.

I think it could be alright. Looks like it should be a decent drama type series but I'm a bit iffy on the concept. Still it has a decent cast and I've liked the other stuff the creator has done.

So no 10-episode dump. I assume this will be weekly like 11/22/63? That's annoying.

Aaron Paul is in for a second season.

I enjoyed the first episode. So far I'd say it shows more promise than any other Hulu original (but I haven't watched 11-22-63 yet).

I liked it kind of, but I really hate paying for Hulu and having to watch commercials. I know they have a new, more expensive, commercial free option, but I hoped that their own series would be commercial free.

I was so pumped for this show because of the cast, but found it really dull and uninteresting. A lot of angst and self-doubting, but not a lot of suspense or plot movement.

I watched the whole season and thought it was ok. Not great, but not horrible. But I can see people being bored. I guess what kept me watching was that I didn't have much else to watch.
I did find it interesting how ridiculous this cult is (as I find all cults and religions). It really reminded me of Big Love (which also happens to have Aaron Paul) and the weirdness of the whole Mormon thing.
I'll watch S2 - but I think it really needs to turn things up a few notches.

In its second season, The Path follows the Meyerist Movement as it tries to make sense of Doctor Meyer's mysterious departure. Tormented by strange visions, Eddie struggles with a new life in the secular world while Sarah, despite her skepticism of Cal, now stands beside him as Co-Guardian of The Light. When Sarah finally learns of Cal's dark past, she buries the truth for the betterment of The Movement. Cal and Sarah, now closer than ever, strive to atone for their misdeeds while Eddie, confronted with the meaning of his visions, discovers the truth of Doctor Meyer's departure.
Premieres 1/25/15 - 13 episodes second season.

Season 3 starts today on Hulu. The first three episodes are up.
A miracle by Eddie Lane went viral, and Meyerism has grown exponentially across the world. As the new Guardian of the Light, Eddie is forced to face the question of whether he can grow the movement without becoming a cult leader. Cal is haunted by dark demons from the past and must come face to face with them in order to defeat them. Sarah questions her faith, and in looking outside the movement for answers, she may discover one of Meyerism's deepest secrets, and the one person who could put an end to it all!

A Hulu original show that no one watched (even though it lasted 3 seasons) got cancelled.
So surprise here. Wouldn't surprise me if Shut Eye gets cancelled next.
But, When no one watches it on DVD Talk, you know it's doomed.
