It's a series on SyFy, but it doesn't air until January 25th. SyFy previewed the Pilot last month and that will air again on the 25th.

Re: The Magicians
I read the first Magicians book when it first came out for our book club and it was pretty good, though I didn't continue on to the others. I used to read Lev Grossman when he had that blog with Matt Selman from The Simpsons but it's been a while. Could be an interesting show, expand the world of the books.

I was blown away by the pilot but I wonder if it will find an audience. This is Harry Potter for adults. The pilot was very well made and had the beginnings of a promising mythology.
Adult fantasy is always a tough sell to mainstream audiences, even more difficult than hard sci-fi.

Really enjoyed the pilot, looking forward to the series.
Syfy is actually putting out some decent programming lately.

As a magic hobbyist, and not Harry Potter, et el., I really enjoyed both the tip of the hat to real magicians (yeah he's got a book on the shelf by the great Slydini) and the mixture of fantasy. Loved the "beast" at the end and its music also.

Felt like Harry Potter Goes to College (mostly because of the classes, I guess), but it was pretty good. I don't know if I'll make it a priority to keep up, though.

The Magicians (SyFy) -- Season 1 Thread -- From the EP of Supernatural -- 1/25/16
Syfy and Universal Cable Productions (UCP) are excited to present the new scripted drama series, THE MAGICIANS. Starring Jason Ralph (Quentin Coldwater), Stella Maeve (Julia), Olivia Taylor Dudley (Alice), Hale Appleman (Eliot), Arjun Gupta (Penny) and Summer Bishil (Margo), THE MAGICIANS is based on Lev Grossman's best-selling novels. The series centers on Quentin, a brilliant grad student chosen to attend Brakebills College for Magical Pedagogy, a secret upstate New York university specializing in magic. He and his 20-something friends soon discover that the magical fantasy world they read about as children is all too real - and poses grave danger to humanity.

Here's an interview with Sera Gamble taking about her involvement with the creation of this show.

This thread really needs to be merged with the prior thread for The Magicians. I doubt it sees enough discussion to sustain a new thread.

I liked the second episode almost as much as the first episode. There are no annoying characters and I am really interested in where they will go with Fillory.
I've not read the books this show is based on. Are they aimed at younger audiences?

Watched episode 1 tonight and liked it. The magic effects were decent. Also helps that there are a few pretty attractive girls in the cast.
Seems like they have a few story threads going. The Beast at the end was interesting.

Surprisingly good considering the material and how easily it could completely suck. Ros is looking pretty good, though her secret is way too easy to figure out

Wow. I'm usually in agreement with a lot of you on shows, but this did not hit the mark for me. I'll make it a point to watch episode 2 to see if things improve, but the pilot did nothing to grab me.
The pacing was slow, not to mention the plot jumped all around at the beginning. I couldn't tell if the party was a dream, or flashbacks. Then it turns out to be the plot we're following.
It didn't do much to introduce us to characters or establsh the world they are in, nor much of the one they were entering.
Also, the characterization of the main guy was weird. One scene he's unsure and awkward. Next he's belittling his friend and telling her she isn't good enough.
That said, I didn't have much care for his friend that didn't make the cut. Then for her to turn to the dark side seems cliched. Of course she'll probably have to make some monumental decision to support her friend, or betray him.

I've been loving this show through three episodes. A great cast of characters and likable leads usually makes for a good series in the long run.
I now plan to read the book trilogy this show is based. I'll probably wait until the first season is over before dipping into the books.
