Beowulf (Esquire/ITV) -- Series Thread -- U.S. debut 1/23/16
One of the fastest growing networks in cable, Esquire embarks on a journey into its second original scripted series with the epic tale of "Beowulf," premiering Saturday, January 23rd at 10pm ET/PT. Based on the legendary English poem over a thousand years old, Beowulf tells the story of a disillusioned and damaged hero. The 13-episode, one hour drama will chronicle Beowulf's return to his home Herot, to make peace with his past. Unwittingly in search of a cause to believe in and a community to fight for, Beowulf finds himself wrongly accused of murder and hunts down the true perpetrator to avenge the death of his fellow kinsmen. Beowulf becomes Herot's tough but unconventional hero, responsible for upholding the law and protecting the town from danger. The last of a dying breed, Beowulf is a man capable of shaping the world around him by his actions and force of will. While this may seem like a familiar tale, Beowulf unearths the full story of the complicated, driven man behind the lore.

13 episode 1st season. This is making it's U.S. debut tonight. It's also airing in the UK on ITV. They are 3 weeks ahead over there. Directv does not carry Esquire in HD, so that may hinder some of you from watching this. But, it may be posted in HD on demand. Also, not sure how many of you have even watched Esquire. It was formerly Style Network.

Few providers are offering Esquire in HD. Verizon Fios doesn't offer it in HD. I'll give it a quick look but will bail if I don't think it's very good.

This should be right up my alley but all these attempts to latch on to the success of "Vikings" seem to fall a bit short. I'm hopeful but will likely just DVR the series and get to it later if I hear good things. Fortunately Comcast has Esquire in HD.

Episode 1 is available on the Esquire website, but you need to log in through your provider. Directv is one of the providers.

Beyond William Hurt, nothing stuck out to me as particularly memorable except a couple of the fantasy animals. This was rather pedestrian writing in episode one. Threatening the life of the title character in the first episode makes for a rather boring plot. That isn't always a terrible sign but it doesn't portend greatness.
I'll give it one or two more episodes to catch my interest.

I've only seen about 15 minutes of the middle of the episode, but I didn't care for the Grendel design. Looked like the love child of Gollum and a werewolf.

FYI
For anyone here with Directv, it looks like they are posting HD episodes on demand roughly 4-5 days after the episode airs. I've been getting them that way.

I find myself pleasantly surprised at how much I am enjoying this show. With all of the tv available to watch I am surprised that this has turned into a show that I binge watch if I fall behind a few eps (which is what I just did this past weekend). It is not a particularly deep show, but each episode seems to move along at a brisk enough pace to keep me engaged and interested in upcoming episodes.

The last episode was weak but the overall show was pretty good. Kind of interesting that Beowulf isn't the focus of the show in the second half.
