What the hell is up with The Martian being up for best Musical/Comedy? I haven't seen it yet, but is it really funny enough to be up for a comedy and not drama?

Normally it wouldn't matter, just happens to be in a year where Love and Mercy is an awards contender, and Love is a 3d pornographic film by Noe.
The Best Comedy nominees are a bit daft, but overall it isn't a terrible line-up.

There are some very funny moments but I wouldn't think overall it would be considered a "comedy." I would guess if it wasn't shoehorned into the comedy category the movie, and Matt, wouldn't get nominated.

Re: Golden Globes 2016 nominees [Movies]
In fact it's sort of an insult to the film to categorize it as a Comedy when it's trying to be a science-based exploration of what it would take to rescue a man from Mars.
Anyways, congrats to the HFP for figuring out a way to get both Matt and Leo up on the
Awards stage on the same night.
In other fronts, they did pretty well. Glad for the Nominations for Sly and for Paul Dano, even if they're at the expense of the Spotlight guys (and Benicio Del Tore). Best Supporting Actor Oscar is so wide open this year -- the complete opposite of last Oscar season.
Twenty-four hours ago I had thought Steve Jobs was as dead as, well, Steve Jobs. I guess not now after the SAGs and Golden Globes.

Re: Golden Globes 2016 nominees [Movies]
Don't the studios choose what category the titles get nominated in? Kind of like how Emmys said Orange is the New Black no longer qualified as a comedy?
The Hollywood Foreign Press has 90 members, it seems like they just didn't care

Re: Golden Globes 2016 nominees [Movies]
I believe they refused to accept Alicia Vikander (Danish Girl) and Rooney Mara (Carol) in the Supporting Actress category, which is what their respective studios wanted. They both ended up in the Best Actress category.
This is the same GGs though that gave Best Supporting Actress to Kate Winslet for The Reader though, so YMMV.

My guess is that "Joy" isn't much of a comedy either...unless you thought The Fighter, American Hustle, and Silver Linings Playbook were.

Yes they do. I'm sure they did it on purpose just to get it in there.
IMO it is.
Should've been nominated for Picture, Director, Screenplay, Actress & Supporting Actor. For the Oscars it should get those plus cinematography, sound, score & editing.
I doubt any of that will happen but who knows.

Are you kidding me? Gervais is the best thing that happened to the Globes for the past several years. The fact that he doesn't give a rat's ass and he hates what Hollywood stands for. Love it.
