The First Annual DVDTalk Fantasy Comic Book Challenge - August 2015

Challenge starts at dusk on July 31st and ends at dawn in September 1st. Double credit eligible items get the bonus of being able to be double counted the entire days of those 31st and 1st.

Fantasy could technically include much superhero stuff, but try to steer towards actual fantasy.

My goals are to read a Conan essentials volume, a bunch of digital Red Sonja from all these Dynamite bundles, and finish up Bone. Oh, and the Amulet series from Scholastic that I just sampled and loved.

Oh crap, yeah, I almost forgot that I hope to read all of Fables. No way all these goals will come close to happening.

I'm hoping to finish Fables, read Wytches, Journey Into Mystery (I've heard people call it Marvel's Sandman) and a bunch of Conan books that have been on my shelf forever.

Re: The First Annual DVDTalk Fantasy Comic Book Challenge - August 2015

Undeadcow's Fables / Fantasy Challenge 2015
Spoiler:
August 31
Fables 150 - plot comes to a halt with some stuff feeling more like fan fiction musings but overall a nice comprehensive sendoff exploring the future of Fables characters and offering some resolutoon. [counting 10 page graphic novel as 5 issues]
Fables 141-149 (Fables tpb volume 21) - really good but with an odd fast pacing stalled by intermingled backstory, nicely closes things off with humorous 'last story of...' interludes.
August 30
Fables 130-140 (Fables tpb volume 20) - fast past twists that keep things interesting with some good imagery and paying off on early plot.
Fairest: In All the Land - I enjoyed the rotating artists in a tale that ties up some loose ends from the core series and adds depth of at least a few side characters; ultimately it doesn't seem to impact the core series but is a nice send off as things come to a close. [counting 150 page graphic novel as 6 issues]
August 29
Fairest 14-20 (Fables tpb volume 3) -
Fairest 7-13 (Fables tpb volume 2) - great imagery with unique fables and plot but oddly retroactively changes a character then sort of nullifies itself. Fun but disposable; hopefully some plot threads get more followup.
August 28
Fables 124-129 (Fables tpb volume 19) - interesting twist and nice focus on snow white but feels like it slips into anticlimatic feeling melodrama.
Cinderella: Fables Are Forever 1-6 - I want to like the basic premise of this plot, which ties in nicely to Jack of Fables, but it's overly long with some happenstance and eyerolling turns.
August 27
Fairest 1-6 (Fairest tpb volume 1) - so far I like Fairest a lot; it builds nicely on Fables better establish the snow queen and giving a cool twist to Beauty/Beast plot.
August 26
Fables 114-123 (Fables tpb volume 18) - surreal adventure with some nice emotional weight.
August 25
Fables 108-113 (Fables tpb volume 17) - rewarding shift of focus.
August 24
Fables 100-107 (Fables tpb volume 16) - clever play on superhero tropes with some amusing antics and a dramatic conclusion that seems abrupt but hits home.
August 23
Fables: Werewolves of the Heartland (original graphic novel) - never have I seen so much silly nudity in a comic but overall it works nicely to tell a cryptic tale that focuses less on Bigby and more on a surreal surroundings, I enjoyed this more than I expected with it's mix of werewolf action and mystery. [counting 149 pages as 6 issues]
August 22
Fables 94-99 (Fables tpb volume 15) - some really nice action and twists that helps build on the conflict introduced too many issues ago, nicely filtered through the perspective of Rose Red who plays a more subtle role in the drama.
August 20
Fables 86-93 (Fables tpb volume 14) - gets things back on a roll shuffling the magical Fables status quo but also taking a too long to pay off with the new villain.
August 19
The Literals 1-3 (Great Fables Crossover, Fables tpb volume 13) - The Great Fables crossover ended up feeling overly long with too big a reliance on cute visual wordplay, some of the Jack of Fables precusor content was miles better because it was more zany and less direct while here the "meta" stuff comes across as condescendingly straightforward. It's a shame that the promising core Fables storyline seemed set aside for such a bare crossover.
Jack of Fables 33-35 (Great Fables Crossover, Fables tpb volume 13)
Fables 83-85 (Great Fables Crossover, Fables tpb volume 13)
Jack of Fables 28-32 (tpb volume 5) - nice payoff from the storyline so far with epic conflict mixed with less effective intentionally obnoxious comedy.
Fables 76-82 (tpb volume 12) - I really enjoyed the introduction of a mystical new villain.
August 18
Cinderella: From Fabletown With Love 1-6 (tpb volume 1) - the worst Fable storyline so far, dialogue feels overlong and awkward without much really going on; some of the Cinderella focused Fables issues were standout but the character gets butchered here with some cringe-worthy moments.
August 17
Fables 70-75 (tpb volume 11) - really nice pay-off after all the set-up, some parts feel abrupt but a good storyline.
Jack of Fables 22-27 (tpb volume 4) - gets too silly and overlong delaying interesting plot set-up for gags spoiling some of the earlier promise in the series.
August 16
Jack of Fables 17-21 (tpb volume 4)
Jack of Fables 12-16 (tpb volume 3) - at this point I'm enjoying the Jack spinoff more than the core Fables series given it's nice meta themes and mystery surrounding the prison, plus it keeps introducing interesting fables.
Jack of Fables 6-11 (tpb volume 2)
August 15
Fables 60-69 (tpb volume 10) rewarding storyline that builds on earlier elements, a highlight of the series so far even if some parts felt too 'magical'
August 14
Fables 52-59 (tpb volume 9) continued build-up
August 13
Fables: 1001 Nights of Snowfall (graphic novel) Nice bit-size backstory; adds some needed gravity to some characters [Counting 145 pages as 6 issues]
August 12
Fables 48-51 (tpb volume 8) oddly paced seems focused on maneuvering plot points for a building thread; some nice payoff with the wedding but seems abrupt.
August 11
Jack of Fables 1-5 (tpb volume 1) interesting expansion of the Fables universe playing nicely out of the core series but ultimately seems disposable
August 10
Fables 42-47 (tpb volume 7) - ok... but seems like too much of a tangent, unless it pays off later, and some plot feels too 'magical.'
August 7
Fables 34-41 (tpb volume 6) - nice focus on Boy Blue giving a varied take on the mythology and other worlds.
August 6
Fables 22, 28-33 (tpb volume 5) - the Cinderella stuff feels far out but is maybe necessary to build a darker tone; the series starts to falter some in this collection.
August 4
Fables 19-21, 23-27 (tpb volume 4) - a high point in the series so far, really enjoying the plot.
August 3
Fables 11-18, Last Castle [1 shot] (tpb volume 3) - able to do a lot with the limited set of characters so far. Some of the one shot stories are less interesting so the flow suffers a bit but issues 15-18 are some of the best so far despite the silly twist with Bigby.
August 2
Fables 6-10 (tpb volume 2) - better, surprisingly dark.
August 1
Fables 1-5 (tpbvolume 1) - cute but aside from randomly titling the characters after fairy tales doesn't seem like a good fit to the theme or '150 issues later' good; the climax feels broadcast in advance.

Re: The First Annual DVDTalk Fantasy Comic Book Challenge - August 2015

Artesia by Mark Smylie (and did anyone else read the novel, The Barrow, last year? Just incredible! [beware the extremely graphic sex and violence though]) and Poison Elves by Drew Hayes are some of the best real independent comic Fantasies that I've read.

Which maybe doesn't fit this thread, but perhaps I could read them again?

Would The Books of Magic count? I haven't read that series in decades.

These are the very definition of fantasy.

And all those Dreaming, Sandman, Books of Magic series would be great choices. Maybe next August for me.

This is the Fables reading order list that I've started using; being so early into a first time reading it's hard to tell how accurate it is. Seemingly the only things to watch for is the prose part of v1 occurs later in the series.

Re: The First Annual DVDTalk Fantasy Comic Book Challenge - August 2015

thnx for the link atleast i have a outline when to start fairest and jack.

I agree with the first volume was cute and was a fun read but by vol 2 took a much darker tone and a good mix of flashbacks getting to know the characters a bit more.

first day i got to bust out three volumes of fables and a volume of Unwritten *since there is a cross over and all

Someone on another forum had this to say on my dismay over not owning the 'extra' Fables series:
Fables is knocking my socks off so far. Just finished volume four. Now I'm regretting not buying all the related series in the recent big Comixology sale.
The related series are distinctly meh.  Jack's solo book has it's moments, but it's pretty much completely separate, other than 'The Great Fables Crossover', which is the low point of the series (both series, really) anyway.   It gets rather meta (a bit like Deadpool, but not QUITE so over the top) as it goes.

The Cinderella minis are good spy stories, they're worth reading, but not essential.   'Wolves of the Heartland' is basically just a Bigby Solo book.

Then there's Fairest.  The 1st arc is REALLY important... don't miss that.  The rest is less so.  The Beauty and the Beast one is mildly important, too.  Then there's a few side stories, and it end with picking up and finishing a dangling plot line or two from the main book... which you'll probably want to read if you get there.

i read the first trade of Jack of fables and doesnt seem needed but did enjoy it.

I need to take a break from fables today as 2-3 trades a day is blending together a little bit too much.

deciding to find a new fantasy title or catch up on some secret wars

What do you mean by "anything particular worth reading"?

Are we talking about Grimm Fairy Tales crap? I doubt it.

Are we talking about the millions of fantasy themed comics released over the last 60 years? Hells yeah!

Re: The First Annual DVDTalk Fantasy Comic Book Challenge - August 2015

Some suggestions I haven't seen mentioned yet for anyone who's looking for things to read:

Skullkickers is a fun book about two mercenaries wandering through a fantasy world and kicking ass skull. Think Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser, but with a humorous bent.

Tellos is just a good old-fashioned fantasy series with gorgeous art by Mike Weiringo

The Stuff of Legend is about a bunch of toys who go off on a quest to rescue their owner, who has been kidnapped y the boogeyman

Battlepug is a Conan pastiche where the hero rides a giant pug into battle. Awesome stuff.

Cerebus is a classic. It's not for everyone, but everyone ought to give the second volume ("High Society") a try to see if it's for them (creator Dave Sim was still figuring things out in the first volume, so it doesn't really reflect the tone of the rest of the series).

Warlord was created by Mike Grell in the 70s. It's about a U.S. fighter pilot who winds up in a fantasy land called Skataris. It's very much in the Edgar Rice Burroughs vein. The series has gone through ins and outs over the years, and various revivals weren't necessarily good, but the first few dozen issues from the 70s were amazing.

I'm not sure if Carl Barks' and Don Rosa's various Uncle Scrooge stories count, but they often had fantasy elements and were always great.

I finally cracked open the first deluxe volume of Fables this weekend. I've read a few issues here and there of Fables but plan to start from the beginning.
