I saw Southpaw during the AMC free screening on Tuesday night for the Stub Hub members. I wonder how much potential box office money was lost because of those free showings.
The $16.5M seems a decent number for a movie that didn't have a tremendous amount of buzz. I think it will pull in about $30-35M when it wraps up it's domestic run. Don't know if it has any potentially decent international numbers in it.

For anyone curious, Terminator Genisys is now at $305M total box office. It's international legs saved it from being a flat out bust. Don't know if that's enough cash for the Ellisons and Paramount to officially greenlight the next movie in their planned trilogy.

Only a 2.1 multiplier for Southpaw? That's horror genre levels. I'm thinking at least $40M. Reviews at least were so-so (58% on RT) and it got an "A" grade from audiences.

With Mission Impossible and Vacation opening up this week, it's going to drop at least 50%. I think it's going to drop to $7-8M next week. I don't know if it has enough legs to reach $40M with 2 more big high profile summer movies coming out this week. Most movie goers will probably see them over anything else next weekend.

Either Vacation or Mission Impossible will be a bust. I'm think MI, though it could be Vacation with how hot Trainwreck is going.
Studio is very happy for Southpaw as it beat expectations for the weekend. I'm actually really shocked it didn't do more as all the shows I watched have promoted the film. Nightcrawler had #32 million, so I think Southpaw should be able to rank in $40 by the end of it as Nightcrawler opened at $10.

I think Vacation will open at #2 next weekend. There are those who would rather see a comedy than a big budget action movie and the Vacation name along with Helms should get eyes on it.

Not saying it won't have a 50% drop, in fact I wouldn't be surprised if it's closer to 55%, so using that number it's at $24M by the end of weekend #2, not including the weekdays (if it averages $1M/day between Mon to Thurs then that takes its total to $28M). If it had toxic WOM then I'd agree, I just don't see it getting that low of a multiplier even with the competition. Any examples of similar movies performing that poorly?
I liked the movie and would have paid money to see it if I wasn't offered the free screening, but I can see how it's not a huge draw for many. Sports movies, especially boxing can be very formulaic and predictable.
