Re: What Are You Reading? (June 2015)

Waiting on my pre-order of this to download tomorrow. The last Clines novel I read, 14, was a really cool Lovecraftian story.

The folks in Mike Erikson's small New England town would say he's just your average, everyday guy. And that's exactly how Mike likes it. Sure, the life he's chosen isn’t much of a challenge to someone with his unique gifts, but he’s content with his quiet and peaceful existence.

That is, until an old friend presents him with an irresistible mystery, one that Mike is uniquely qualified to solve: far out in the California desert, a team of DARPA scientists has invented a device they affectionately call the Albuquerque Door. Using a cryptic computer equation and magnetic fields to “fold” dimensions, it shrinks distances so that a traveler can travel hundreds of feet with a single step.

The invention promises to make mankind’s dreams of teleportation a reality. And, the scientists insist, traveling through the Door is completely safe.

Yet evidence is mounting that this miraculous machine isn’t quite what it seems—and that its creators are harboring a dangerous secret.

As his investigations draw him deeper into the puzzle, Mike begins to fear there’s only one answer that makes sense. And if he’s right, it may only be a matter of time before the project destroys…everything.

Big fan of Mieville, as well. So far it's quite good....

Great book! Being a scientist, I loved all the attention to that detail while never (at least for me) venturing into "technobabble". Yeah, I can totally see this being a movie. We just need to improve the book by throwing in some aliens (and maybe a robot) and we'll have a winner!

Ok, finished. So... I had no idea, but (possible mild spoilage ahead)
Spoiler:
this book is a pseudo-sequel/companion piece to 14. I kinda feel like it's not marketed as this because he wanted the connection to be a twist, but honestly the twist was blatantly obvious from the beginning, even though it's not spelled out until about 200 pages in. It's more sci-fi than 14, but ultimately felt like it tread the same ground. Regardless, I did enjoy the hell out of it.

I got a copy in 7th grade. My school was ending their junior high and our teacher gave us some books at the end of the year. I didn't read it until after college though.

The movie is certainly a great achievement of bringing a classic to the big screen and it was hard to put the book down once I started reading it.

Re: What Are You Reading? (June 2015)

Some lightweight fiction after finishing War and Piece.

Guns of the Gods by Talbot Mundy
The Singing Bone by R. Austin Freeman
Highways in Hiding by George O. Smith
The Fourth R by George O. Smith

Currently reading:
The Cat Who Walked Through Walls by Robert Heinlein

The Singing Bone includes the story A Case of Premeditation which is obviously the inspiration for the Columbo television series. Freeman invented the inverted mystery -- where you see the murder done, and the suspense is how the detective gathers the clues to solve the crime. In this story, you first see the murderer do his preparations (which don't make sense), then use the preparations to commit the murder, and then the detective arrives to solve the case. It's available for free online, and I recommend that mystery buffs read it.
