NEED FOR SPEED REBOOT REVEALED
BY DANIEL KRUPA
After being teased throughout the week, the new Need for Speed has been officially unveiled, and it's called, quite simply, Need for Speed.
The latest instalment in EA's long-running racing series is being pitched as a "full reboot", hence the stripped back title. EA promises Need for Speed will draw on what it considers the core pillars of the series: "deep customisation, authentic urban car culture, a nocturnal open world, and an immersive narrative that pulls you through the game."
Need for Speed is being developed by Ghost Games – the franchise's dedicated studio in Gothenburg, Sweden – which also produced the 2013 title Need for Speed: Rivals.
Marcus Nilsson, Executive Producer at Ghost Games, says, "Need for Speed is one of the most iconic names in gaming, and we're returning it to greatness in this reboot. Pulling on our 20 years of history and then taking a year out from releasing a game, we are making the game we've always wanted to. We're listening to the fans and delivering an experience that will capture their imagination and unleash their passion for cars and speed."
Car culture is a key focus for the reboot, with EA working closely with its own car culture community, Speedhunters. (Speedhunters is car culture blog founded in 2008 and owned by EA.) The Need for Speed reboot will explore the "world of past, present and emergent trends of the urban car scene." This urban and underground focus can be seen in the short teaser trailer released today and the first screen shots above.
Need for Speed will be released worldwide in Autumn, 2015 on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.

While the game structure wore thin after a little while, I loved the mechanics in Rivals so I'm really looking forward to this

"All footage captured in-game"
If so, it looked fantastic. Looks like they are going current gen only, so that probably helps. I think taking a year off was a great idea, and I wish other series would try doing it too. I loved Rivals, so I'm in.

Finally. IMO the original underground for PS2 was the best of the series, so glad to see the game go back to night time street racing.
I've been long tired of racing along country roads with leaves blowing.

That might mess with my policy of not buying EA games anymore. Don't know if I can wait for that to enter The Vault.

It should contain an remastered version of the very first game, the original 3DO release

The initial release for the 360 was my favorite version. I'd love to see that remastered.

Rumor is that the game requires an online connection. So get your throwin' tomatoes ready. Always online, grrr.

I would much rather have an online connection game than an online only game. If they design this game like Titanfall, that's going to suck.

I assume it'll be like Rivals. Online/Offline.

I had a blast with Rivals but felt like the world was a little small / limited, hope this fixes that a little.

I dug that implementation. Everything was more or less optional, and it was fun to just drop into a race for a few minutes and then be back doing what you were doing.

I may cancel my pre-order of this.
Played the EA Access demo last night for about 6 hours. I'm 40% done with everything, and am reaching the point where the game switches from "participation medal" to "mess up once and you have to restart everything".
I like it, but I think the 10 hours of the trial version might be giving me enough time with this year's NFS.

Too many FMVs! Just let me play the game!
10 hours is the most I would play of a racing game. I'm not sure if I would be able to complete 10 of this game. Oh wait, with all the FMV maybe.

The FMV is... odd. It's not good, but it's not inept either. It's merely capable. And that's unfortunate since capable doesn't produce any kind of actual reaction.
Also, it didn't help that I didn't find the option for Fast Travel until 9 hours into the trial.
