The Battle We've Been Waiting For: Mad Max vs. The Avengers (Weekend B.O.: 5/15-5/17)

Avengers: Age of Ultron finished its second week at $97.5M (for comparison: Avengers' second week was at $132M, Iron Man 3's second week was at $89M). I still think it can hit $500M domestically, but this weekend is the first where the film actually has competition.

Mad Max: Fury Road opened to $3.7M in previews last night whereas Pitch Perfect 2 opened to $4.6M. Mad Max: Fury Road is looking at a $40M+ opening weekend, Pitch Perfect 2 is on its way to a $50M+ opening weekend.

You mean the battle for second place. PITCH PERFECT 2 is gonna take the weekend hands down.

It was a joke based upon this thread: http://forum.dvdtalk.com/movie-talk/626353-what-will-no-1-b-o-avengers-aou-weekend-3-mad-max-fr-opening-weekend.html

Holy fuck was I off on my Avengers predictions, but spot on with Pitch Perfect.

Which apparently you thought was news Ash, that Pitch Perfect 2 beat Mad Max. For shame, you old fuck. For shame.

PP2 may have won the weekend, but I think MM will have better holds due to stronger reviews, and it'll definitely perform well overseas.

So PP2 stands to make more in its opening weekend than the original did in its entire run? Damn.

I don't know. The film is resonating well with its core audience and the first film didn't really have any major drops. Looking at the past film's weekends:

Weekend 1: $5.2M in 335 locations.
Weekend 2: $14.9M in 2,770 locations (+188%).
Weekend 3: $9.2M in 2,787 locations (-38%).
Weekend 4: $6.8M in 2,660 locations (-27%).
Weekend 5: $4M in 1,999 locations (-42%, the film's biggest weekend drop during wide release due to the amount of theaters lost).

Most of the drops after that were in the 15-25% range. Even when comparing to another sequel to a film that became a hit due to video (Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me), all those weekends suffered only 40-45% drops. There's no other major comedy and/or film geared towards women until June 5th (Entourage and Spy) and with Memorial Day next weekend, the film will have legs. I think Mad Max will have legs too due to the overwhelming WOM, but I do believe Pitch Perfect 2 will still beat it domestically.

With a $150M budget, MM:FR better have some solid international box office. PP2's budget was only $29M, so Universal's already laughing.

Pitch Perfect 2 has been out in some international markets for nearly two weeks now and the film has only done around $10M overseas whereas Mad Max: Fury Road will probably open to #1 in every market this weekend that's not the United States.

So yes, Max will have the better international draw.

Not only is MM an action movie but it's in 3D. Overseas markets eat that up.

i'm not surprised at the results and think MM will hold for a bit. it has modest hit written on it domestically, but i really hope we get more. this was so fascinating and resonating and haunting. so well done...

MM will get a lot for foreign. Foreign countries eat up crazy and different big movies. MM4 is all that. AND 3D.

Max will show a tire iron up PP2's ass for Worldwide take.

BTW, current estimates have PP2 nearing $70M, MM ~$42M and AOU $37M.

Also, not sure why it'd be surprising that MM would do well overseas, I just assumed that's where Warner was counting on to make its budget back and then some.

I just did not see the $500M predictions for Avengers at all and looks like it may just make it to $400. Not a very good film.

Pitch Perfect looks to be huge, and Mad Max seems to be much higher due to its fantastic reviews.

Oh no, Avengers 2 will only make a little over 400M domestic. The superhero hype is over. What a flop.

46 million ain't bad at all for MM. Next week's ranking/totals will be interesting. Here's hoping it pulls a Titanic in terms of making more money on subsequent weekends than opening weekend. We'll see what happens.

MM:FR would have had a higher weekend gross if they had used "From the Director of Babe:Pig in the City" & "Happy Feet" in their advertising.

Yeah, I wasn't sure.

I guess Titanic was the last one to do that then.

Boxoffice Guru report:
http://www.boxofficeguru.com/weekend.htm

Some interesting quotes:

PITCH PERFECT 2:
Studio data showed that the audience was 75% female and 62% under 25. Moviegoers liked what the singing gals had to offer as the CinemaScore grade was a solid A-.
I'm surprised there were that many younger women going. I would've thought it would skewer older.

MAD MAX:
As expected, business was powered by older men. Studio research showed that the audience was 70% male and 54% over 35.
Y'see, Hollywood? Different crowds for different films can all show up at the same time!

Who said they don't? I thought counter programming was pretty common
