Black Mass (2015, D: Scott Cooper) S: Depp, Edgerton

I thought there was a thread already...

<iframe width="640" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/V5qdxxT-hss?feature=player_embedded" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

In 1970s South Boston, FBI Agent John Connolly (Joel Edgerton) persuades Irish mobster James “Whitey” Bulger (Johnny Depp) to collaborate with the FBI and eliminate a common enemy: the Italian mob. The drama tells the story of this unholy alliance, which spiraled out of control, allowing Whitey to evade law enforcement, consolidate power, and become one of the most ruthless and powerful gangsters in Boston history.

I thought Depp was great in the trailer. I'm stoked for this.

Depp looks like the offspring of Hunter S. Thompson & Benjamin Button.

I've grown tired of Depp in recent years but I agree, he was great in that trailer.

Shows confidence to do a trailer like that -- basically 1 scene of magnetic psychoticism.

Good stuff.

Depp seems like he's doing an impersonation of Jack Nicholson's character in The Departed doing an imitation of White Bulger.

I got more of a Chris Walken vibe.

There are too many good performances in Depp's back catalog for me to write him off after all of his post-POTC junk. If he has a proper director standing over him again saying "do this, not that Johnny, stop doing drunk karaoke singer and be an actor again," I'm convinced he's still capable of proper acting.

Possible, but I don't think his ego would even allow to have a director actually direct him at this point.

I say 5 good performances. Everything after The Ninth Gate he's been on autopilot.

He had Michael Mann for Public Enemies and I thought Christian Bale gave the better performance.

You could be right. Sometimes those high paid stars do whatever the hell they want.

I'm sorry but his role in the original Pirates of the Caribbean film was fantastic. Sure, he was on auto-pilot by the time the third movie came around, but it is — for better or for worse — an iconic performance.

Come on... He was good in Blow. And even if the role is now stale, Jack Sparrow was a great character in the first Pirates. I loved that first film. The small role OUATIM was fun too. I also liked him a lot in Sweeney Todd. But yes... he really has been on "autopilot" for the last 10 years or so, starting with the sequels.

Which?

If I had to choose five, I'd choose:

Ed Wood
Donnie Brasco
Edward Scissorhands
Gilbert Grape
Cry Baby

dex14

This thread did not show up in search last night so I thought I was the first to post it. I put "Johnny Depp" in search and nothing showed up. I put "Black mass" and nothing showed up.

Just watched the clip provided in the first post.
Without seeing anything else and knowing that it's way too early to predict - I think it's a guarantee that Depp will get an Oscar nod. And unless the film get bashed critically, this is probably his best chance at winning an Oscar too.

I would say his major competition is from Ian McKellan in Mr. Holmes, which could have the whole lifetime achievement thing working for it. But then again, neither movie has been released and it's too early to call. This one is either going to do very well with critics or wind up like J. Edgar.

I can only imagine the people who will go to see Black Mass expecting a horror film and get mobsters instead.
