Once Were Warriors (1994)

It's one of my favorite films and there's been a few posts about it here over the years. I found this doc. that might interest some of you. It's called "Once Were Warriors - Where Are They Now"

Re: Once Were Warriors (1994)

Never heard of but now I really want to see this. I love this place so much sometimes when it introduces me to shit like this. Looks really interesting.

The film tells the story of the Hekes, an urban Māori family, and their problems with poverty, alcoholism and domestic violence, mostly brought on by family patriarch Jake. It was directed by Lee Tamahori and stars Rena Owen and Temuera Morrison

Re: Once Were Warriors (1994)

Sad to think Tamahori went on to direct:

Along Came a Spider (2001)
Die Another Day (2002)
xXx: State of the Union (2005)
Next (2007)

A great film that I hope Criterion puts out on Blu. They put it out on laserdisc back in the day and let New Line use their supplements on the dvd, so why not.

Not only my introduction to Jango Fett, but Cliff Curtis too.

There was also a sequel that was released on PAL DVD in Aus. It's not as good ....actually I thought it was kinda shitty but still worth a watch.

Re: Once Were Warriors (1994)

Criterion release would be great.
Looks like both USA region DVDs are now OOP.
I bought the blu-ray from JB Hi-Fi when they had one of their sales.
Want to say I paid between $10 to $15 for it.

I wanted to get that but I've read it's a 50hz BD and my players aren't capable of playing it.

The follow-up, What Becomes of the Broken Hearted?, is good as well.

Edit: sorry, mentioned already.

I've never seen it. It's one of those movies that has a great rep, but looks like a complete downer.

I found it weird they added the brother without any explanation. Especially without any mention of him in the first movie.

Bad artistically, but a part of me gives props to him for parlaying a little indie drama into a big-time Hollywood career.

The next movie on the list, The Devil's Double (2011), was pretty good I thought. No masterpiece, but I thought it was interesting and was a return to more arthouse fare. His next movie (at least according to imdb) is a historical New Zealand story. So it seems like he's at the point in his career where he's back to making the movies with stories he wants to tell (instead of being a director for hire).

Oh man ... you are 100% correct It's been a while since I've seen it, but I remember it just being absolutely devastating emotionally.

I didn't see them close enough together to notice the discrepancy.

Yeah, that threw me off big time.

My biggest complaint about that movie: The title song wasn't played!

I read he was in the novels, though. There was also a third book in the series but I doubt it will ever be adapted into a film.

Once Were Warriors: Twenty years on

Twenty years ago a film mixing social realism, gangs and domestic violence became the most successful movie ever made here. Greg Dixon talks to Once Were Warriors stars Rena Owen, Temuera Morrison and Julian Arahanga about why the film was so special and why it remains a classic.

Re: Once Were Warriors (1994)

I remember when this first came out - A bunch of us went to a theater in chula-vista CA to see it as we were in the military and had barely any money to do anything else.

We loved it, so damn brutal - I remember us walking out of the theater saying how "You don't see movies made like that often".

I will definitely check out the doc.

Agree.

I remember catching this on HBO or Showtime or one of those. It was about 11:30 PM on a work night I was just watching the beginning deciding to tape it or not next time it came on (VHS ) and ending up riveted by it and could not stop watching it and then I couldn't stop thinking about it after. Finally fell asleep about 3:30 AM... that morning.

Re: Once Were Warriors (1994)

apparently we've a US BD for this now...

Seems like it's a good looking disc w/ a 12 min vintage feature thing from what this review says.

Fuck. I loved this movie. Just rough as fuck.

Good news, but it sucks that they couldn't get the director's commentary.

Just jumping in to echo how great this movie is. Lee Tamahori sure churned out some shit after this one.
