Is anyone else sick of how things are being done this gen (console-wise)?
Couldn’t find a solid thread on this but of course if there is – I will delete this one.
As recently mentioned in the far cry 4 thread….having to dl dlc whether you bought it or not. Also: Incomplete patches for games forcing you to constantly update, having to buy external drives to store everything (well, this one I can kind of understand).
Developers thinking were stupid - best example I can think of is Rockstar Games….here’s GTA V, a game that DIDN’T take 5 years to make and heists were NEVER even created during its release in 2013 – to all those who said I was wrong….no, I was obviously right those stupid heists probably never even left phase one. There will also probably be another years wait for the story DLC to come out – you’re talking 3 years since this games release that they will still be pushing out sub-par content for then another 5 years before they release their next full on GTA title.
Other developer – Ubisoft – same game elements in ALL of their games (play far cry 4 and watch dogs to see what I mean).
Now, don’t get me wrong, I love games by both developers but I will definitely NOT continue to buy their games if more creativity isn’t introduced and honestly, it won’t be me stomping my feet and crying about it…it will be out of complete boredom of playing the same damn games over and over again.
As for the consoles themselves….for the xbox one, why the fuck do I have to update the controller? I literally plugged it in via usb to see what it would do and actually installed update?? WTF? Storage is going to be a huge issue in the future if they don’t start bundling what’s needed for these games, I know it costs a lot but if these suckers go above filling up my portable 2 TB drive…..that’s a wrap.
I don’t want to say I’m venting, I’m just getting bored with the same shit for most of these titles. Hell even though call of duty is the same every year…..at least advanced warfare was really fun to play.

nope, I try not to sweat the small stuff
gaming is an escape from the daily grind (poor choice of words as a Destiny player).... I try and find the content that will provide that escape or I will move on
also have to keep in mind these companies are in business to make money and they will always resort back to their tried and true formulas

Every generation has it's own issues. This gen seems to fully embrace rushing software out the door and waiting for patches to fix it.
As much as I'd love to complain about some element, I've frankly just been bored by this generation so far.

Yeah, that I realize (on the money making side of things) - I think maybe me being so blown away by the games that came our for the 360 may have me wanting more as well.

Yeah Rich - a lot of people are bored...a few of my friends who are very into gaming (wouldn't say hardcore) have already sold off their systems.

The AAA space has been utterly boring, utterly broken or lacking in content...or some combination thereof.
Almost everything interesting I've played in the past year has been from an independent studio or has been a "definitive version" from last gen, and most of the things I'm looking forward to are indies as well.
Disclaimer: I need to play PvZ, which looks fresh, and I guess some "indie" games aren't really indie, like Valiant Hearts and Child of Light.

I'm not going to complain about the lack of good games, because I don't think I even played a game on my PS3 for well over a year after I bought it. I would not have purchased it had it not been for BD.
I agree this Gen seems to focus on rushed software, downloads, patches, and HD rereleases. Thankfully Rocksteady decided not to rush Arkham Knight out the door early. I wish more studios would do the same.

The problem I see with most PSN/Live "indie" games is that they could very well have been made on the last gen of systems (and most have ports on those systems anyway). So there's very little that makes the current gen compelling in and of itself.
My pet peeves:
Long install/update times
Online all the time for some games means outages when the network/system is unavailable. Thankfully they didn't make this the standard like they originally wanted.
Halo Anniversary
Niche genres underserved: this is probably the same for most newer systems, but I'm tired of the same genres coming out again and again because the cost to develop is so high
Nickel and Diming with add on content: the new DOA on next gen is an extreme example, and the Japanese developers especially started this last gen, but man if you choose to look at "all new" in the last month you have to weed through a ton of add ons.
I still can't move my PS3 from the main room, because of no bluetooth remote for the PS4. I'm probably the only one, though.
(BTW, what's the deal with the multiple levels of Yasiel Puig themes? Who buys those)
On the other hand, PS Plus makes me hesitant to spend money on games when I have a backlog (which is always), because chances are I'm not going to get around to it before it goes on sale. That's a "plus" I guess.

I don't sweat it. I don't mind the updates. It means that they are continuing to fix the problems they are having. Games are expensive to make and the great ones really don't show up until later in the console generation when the developers have a strong handle on the coding for the consoles. Most of my favorite games for last gen came out in the last 3 years of the console life. The handful of games I play I have enjoyed and I tend to not be too negative unless they are truly broken. Madden, Destiny, AC Blag Flag, Shadow of Mordor, NFS have all been great fun for me this generation. PSN is great in that it constantly gives me more to play.

Nope.
And I don't have any external drive that you are claiming I need for some reason.
I guess it helps that I couldn't care less about GTA single player DLC since I spend all my time in GTA Online.
I do regret getting an Xbox One, it is nothing more than a dust collector for me and I fucking HATE the controller. Tomb Raider 2 is about the only use I can foresee for it.

You would need an external drive if you planned on storing not even a decent amount of games on your xbox one. Yes you could just uninstall one of the 4 games that fit on the internal hard drive all the time but I don't like having to instsall a game just to go back to it and play it so I bought and external drive (Western digital) to store all my games and apps on.

Yeah, you're right actually. I forgot that I did swap out the HD on my PS4 for a 2TB because I knew it would be an issue before too long.
It's safe to say I won't have to worry about it for the Xbox One though.

Next year we get Project Morpheus for PS4. I think 2016 will be the year for VR and will revitalize the industry with new innovation in games.

Every generation has its own issues. Fact of the matter is that the business model for this industry has to change in order for it's continued existence. Game development is inflating in cost at a dramatic rate. And with gamers being so integrated into social media you need to hit your release dates fast. If you want to continue the hobby you'll just have to learn to roll with the punches.
That being said I'm more interested with what indie studios are doing right now than what is going on in the annualized AAA game space.

If they need to hit their release dates fast then they aren't doing a very good job. Everything gets delayed these days. In fact that is something that has bothered me this gen, devs setting release dates they can't keep. I mean just look at The Division, if I remember right they initially said that game would release last year, yet it still doesn't appear to be anywhere near completion. There was never any chance of that game coming out last year.

The consoles launching with a piddly 500GB drive in 2013 was inexcusable, especially when the console makers are pushing digital digital, DIGITAL! Strike one.
Strike two: Season passes. I learned my lesson last gen. I don't think there was a single one that I found worth it. Everyone I bought either had some subpar DLC, or the community had moved on rendering the last pack in a pass pretty worthless.
Minor quibble: having a laundry list of features the console can do before launch, yet 18 months later we're still seeing said features slowly trickle out.
I tried the demo for Child of Light. I'm not an RPG guy, but it was pretty cool. The art direction was fantastic.

I'm not one bit....I can remember the "growing pains" with the 360 and PS3. Both consoles are not even 2yrs old. The PS4 is a totally new system from the PS3. Both offer substantial upgrade and better gaming experience than the previous gen. And we still haven't seen the best they have to offer. Many of the Dees have even stated it as so.....better things are coming.

Also, season passes are a ripoff unless you have the time to fully explore the game at launch. How many DON'T go on sale before the last patch is released?

They treat my PS4's hard-drive as if it's some infinite, never-exhausting well of storage, and it's totally not!

That's not fair, you only named the failed peripherals. What about all the successful not-at-launch peripherals, like... umm... well... plastic guitars?
