The Hurt Locker vs. American Sniper?

similar tones, themes, war, etc...

the two kind of remind me of one another.

so which did you like better?

while i think American Sniper will grow better with repeat viewings, but gut goes with The Hurt Locker right now. i just loved that one and it has a lot of rewatchability for me.

The Hurt Locker.

It's nowhere near as disjointed in the narrative as American Sniper. Also... it's just better of a movie. Sienna Miller was HORRID in AS.

Re: The Hurt Locker vs. American Sniper?

My dad is retired army and served in the marines during Vietnam so I have been around military people all of my life and even know some that have the MOS of the troops in Hurt Locker. Every one says the movie is complete bullshit.

American Sniper is based on a book proven to have falsehoods in it.

I will put on Apocalypse Now or Full Metal Jacket instead. Even though the part where Private Pyle shoots and kills the drill sergeant would have never happened in real life.

I just have a problem with films that claim to be based on real events or accurately portraying something and end up being bullshit. I think it does a disservice to the people who went through the actual event. I even think something like James Cameron's Titanic is disrespect. Let's take a tragedy and turn it into a love story.

But movies are also in the business of entertainment and making money. Love stories make people happy, and happy people buy movie tickets. Restrepo may be the most accurate war movie in recent years, but it hasn't made any money.

I have no desire to see THE HURT LOCKER again. AMERICAN SNIPER, on the other hand, I plan to see again in theaters AND own on Blu-ray.

I have no desire to watch American Sniper but love The Hurt Locker. I have the Italian BD of that - it was the first of the region blocked territories that actually got before it went through it's Oscar buzz and before Magnolia acquired the BD distribution. I had for almost a year before it hit stateside and the UK.

Hurt Locker was a better made movie, American Sniper was more entertaining.

War movies shouldn't be entertaining, but they also shouldn't be boring, and since The Hurt Locker was neither, I give the edge to The Hurt Locker. It's a shame it was followed up with Zero Dark Thirty, which I found was just boring.

Haven't seen American Sniper although I imagine it wouldn't take that much to be better than Hurt Locker which I found boring.

I don't get enjoyment from watching war films. I don't own a single war film, unless you county fantasy stuff like Forrest Gump, Star Wars or LOTR, which I don't. I think there are some great war films, but I don't find them entertaining like I would other genres. It's similar to considering Requiem For a Dream a great film, but I don't find it entertaining. I guess stuff like the Rambo movies are entertaining, but isn't really a good depiction of war. Then there is stuff like the horror genre where it's a mixed bag, where they're entertaining but not scary, and vice versa, with the latter being few and far between (but superior to the "entertaining" stuff).

No wonder you hate Starship Troopers.

Re: The Hurt Locker vs. American Sniper?

I thought Bradley Cooper was fantastic in "American Sniper," but pretty much hated everything else about the movie. Disjointed structure, ham-fisted storytelling, and all the family stuff felt like poorly-written crap I've seen in a dozen other movies.

So I'm going to go with "The Hurt Locker" and/or "Zero Dark Thirty."

Calling Starship Troopers a war film is an insult to war films. All they had to do was nuke the bugs, but then there would be no movie.

Starship Troopers is a satire of the aforementioned war movie jingoism and of action films on general.

Naw, Hurt Locker had better filmmaking technique and tension. American Sniper is more entertaining and fast paced. Storywise, American Sniper covers a lot more, but its characters are cardboard cutouts.

Re: The Hurt Locker vs. American Sniper?

The hurt locker comment was for me personally - It was just such a let down...Yes, it looked nice and sounded pretty good but it just fell flat for me.

This is the first I'm hearing (haven't read any reviews) that the characters are kind of lame - not good but I'll stop here as I haven't even seen it yet and I'm posting completely off topic in this thread

Re: The Hurt Locker vs. American Sniper?

fair, by and large people seem to be enjoying the movie. It isn't a great or memorable film, but it is an overall really entertaining war film.
