Tips for Selling on Craigslist?

I'm thinking of selling some miscellaneous household items on Craigslist. I'm hoping to just have interested buyers email me, then come to my house to pick-up the item and pay cash. But I've never used Craigslist before. So I'm not sure how it all works and if there's anything I need to worry about.

Any Craigslist users have some good advice?

Re: Tips for Selling on Craigslist?

I used to meet at a local mall but I did have someone come to my house to buy over 100 laserdiscs that I didn't want to have to load in my car.

Only take cash.

Be prepared to get a lot of emails with porn pictures asking you to click on a link.

Be prepared for people asking to send you a money order & have someone pick up the items for them. Most of the time the email doesn't even sound like they know what you are selling.

Re: Tips for Selling on Craigslist?

I only meet in public at easy-to-spot landmark places so they don't get lost.

I always tell my wife where I'm going. Maybe that's overkill, but that's what I do.

Be prepared for some lame "This feels like a drug deal!" jokes from suburban soccer moms who are new to Craigslist.

Post all your terms (CASH ONLY), post good pictures, etc.

I only had people come to my place once and that was to buy a bed and they hemmed and hawed forever and then didn't buy. It took forever. It was obvious in minute two they weren't going to buy and I couldn't get them out of the house for like fifteen minutes. Since then, I only do public meet-ups.

I always have them come to my house. I'm not sure why people say it's not safe. But be prepared to be low balled to hell. I always tell must bring the exact total with them. When they show up & tell me they only have so much on them. I guess you wasted a trip out to my house. You wasted your & my time as well as your gas money.

Re: Tips for Selling on Craigslist?

Is the reason for meeting in public places a matter of safety? I'm a big guy, so I usually don't think about stuff like that. I figured I'd mostly run into garage sale & flea market type of people. Is there a real problem with thieves and muggers targeting Craigslist users?

Or is it because sellers don't want the hassle of someone coming to their house? I can understand this. And my house can be hard to find without a map or GPS. But it would probably be a bigger hassle for me to meet someone at a mall. Most of the items I'm selling are in the $20-$50 range. So I don't want to spend too much time on this.

I planned for the spam by setting up a new Gmail address just for Craigslist.

Do you need to give people a phone number? Or can everything be handled through email?

Bring a gun. Meeting in public is a safety issue. Yes, scammers and thieves love Craigslist.

Re: Tips for Selling on Craigslist?

Use this as a template for your ad. Guaranteed to make your transaction go smoothly.

Selling off my ENTIRE collection. Priced to sell fastly! There are BETWEEN 300-325 DVD's in this collection. Price comes to LESS than $2.00 a piece. DO the MATH! And you will see I'm RIGHT!

Will NOT separate. No you can not come to my home and "cherry pick" through them. We have two very young children here and will not have that going on. Priced to sell fastly. Price is negotiable but will not accept low ball offers. NO trades. No favors. Do not ask to come to my house and bring candy to give to my children. It WON'T happen. Will not sell individual items. WHOLE lot only. Do NOT come into my house with the notion of not purchasing this collection, if you WALK IN my house, it's considered SOLD! Do NOT look into the direction of my two small children at any point of the purchasing and removal time. Please do not ask for a list of titles. I do not have time to sit here and list them ALL because as stated, two young children here that take up most of our time and attention. And NO, the book shelf does not come with it, like I said I have small children and I don't need you picking that thing up and swinging it and hurting my two young children. Not TODAY and Not Tomorrow. Not EVER!!! Do NOT email me with silly ridiculous low offers, because not only is it insulting to me, ITS also insulting to my two small children who I take care of 24/7. Will remove when sold.
