Boardwalk Empire (S5E07) -- "Friendless Child" -- 10/19/14

At war with Luciano, Nucky looks to hold onto his assets in Atlantic City. Willie (Ben Rosenfield) and Eli become involved in Nucky's war. Maranzano meets his fate. Nucky reads Gillian's (Gretchen Mol) letter from the hospital. In 1897, Mabel and Nucky argue about a young runaway from Trenton, while Nucky does a discreet favor for the Commodore (John Elllison Conlee).

Written by Riccardo DiLoreto & Cristine Chambers and Howard Korder; directed by Allen Coulter.

Well, looks like Micky finally wore out his welcome.

Weird ending. Not really sure what they have planned for the final episode since this one was all over the place.

I think this has been a great final season. Sad to see it end.

Another kudo for their casting and the acting of the flashback characters. Young Gillian was spot on in her style of speech and her looks.

Sorry to see Nucky's bodyguard go. Not sorry to see Mickey go (though the actor did a great job). Surprised it took that long.

Can't believe there's only one episode left. We need resolution to Margaret, Gillian (present), the Luciano/Lansky business and I suppose we'll see Gillian, the younger, presented to the Commodore.

I also assume we'll see Capone pinched for tax evasion.

Anything else outstanding? Doubting we'll see Narcisse, unless it's to show his demise(?), but that story seemed to be done with Chalky.

I was kinda hoping Mickey would make it out of this show alive, against all odds. There's no way that guy would have made it that long, so it would have been funny to see him be the last man standing.

I binge watched the last 4 eps, so it totally felt like "who can we get rid of next?" to end the series. Guess it can't end much differently though.

I agree - he grew on me and was never a gun toting hit man. He was a very good middle manager in the operation.

Again - for lack of good writing and time (because we can never have enough late night talks with young nucky and his wife) all it took to have Knucky give up his empire was to kidnap a family member... too bad Chip Rosetti didn't know this - he could have saved himself a lot of bullets and men.

they showed Narcisse in the preview for next week.

I think they are going to break with history and have Nucky whacked by Jimmy's son.

Seems like Nucky gave up his holdings to Luciano and went pretty darn quietly.

Really good episode. The standoff was intense.

So is Jimmy's son the guy that says he is from Indiana that never takes money from anyone?

I get the impression that Nucky was planning to walk away from his empire at any rate so handing it over was no big hit other than to his pride. Whether he gets to live to enjoy his ill-gotten stock market gains remains to be seen.

Neither do I. Shows are more enjoyable that way in my opinion.

I enjoyed much of this episode (except the Siegel scenes- who would go through great lengths to get him back?). This season feels a bit rushed, and I sometimes wish the writers would resist the need to cram every characters story arc into an eight episode season. I'd prefer text at the end of the finale over forced endings, but I guess that's not how TV works. I expect the last episode to be a real downer to watch, but I'm ready to get it over with.

Yeah, I think that's why he quickly gave Doyle what he asked him for, with Doyle thinking he wouldn't agree.

I get the idea behind the flashbacks, but they're still unnecessary.

Great job by young Gillian, I've done a 180 these flashbacks, they've done a nice job of completing the final season.

Can't believe only one ep left, seems like so much to tie up.

Re: Boardwalk Empire (S5E07) -- "Friendless Child" -- 10/19/14

Shit sure did escalate quickly.

I purposefully have avoided reading what Nucky's real life fate was. Right now it looks like he was fine with walking away from everything since he is hoping to make out like a bandit in the stock market. Smart move, but I'm sure things won't work out for him in the end.

I'm both glad and sad to see Mickey finally get killed, but it was great that it was mid wise-crack.

But like I said before, he's based on the character not the actual one. So he could live or die.

I really doubt they will deviate from whatever his actual fate was. Have they drastically changed anything about what happened to the real Nucky up till now?

They've strayed far from the real Nucky.

Personally, I think (and hope) that Nucky makes some decent money off short-selling that stock; that was he can ride off into the sunset. Not "Rockefeller rich", but comfortable enough to live on. I've watched enough shows where something mentioned in passing - like the short selling in Empire - has a huge impact later on.

Another fantastic episode. Say what you will about young adult Nucky (and those fake teeth), but the actor is AMAZING. He embodies the older Nucky's mannerisms, tone and inflection, facial tics and expressions, and body language perfectly. I've liked the flashbacks.

Sad to see this show end on Sunday. It'll be missed.

Agreed. Now that's what I call acting. But he likely won't get any real recognition for it.

As for missing the show, I won't miss the show we've had this season. I'll miss the previous show.

I almost think it has been 5 shows. Each season was very different.
