You're probably being throttled by your ISP.

I recently discovered that by plugging an Ethernet cable into my DVR, I can get connected to the Internet. I naively assumed that surely, if the wifi was slightly slow, the connection coming straight through the line would be full blast, but I still can't get it above 720p. I'm seriously starting think they throttling is the only remaining choice, though I can't imagine that the ISPs would ever admit it.
EDIT: I'm a moron. I contacted AT&T, and my parents' plan is only 3.0 Mbps, so naturally getting it to buffer anywhere above that would be difficult. I can, but of course it would cost more, and they spend too much on me as it is
. Ask you ISP what speed you're running based on how much you're paying. Then you don't wind up looking foolish like I did .
