Netflix’s guess ratings: How accurate?

I was just wondering how accurate Netflix’s guess ratings are for other people? I know a couple years ago, Netflix was criticized for their ratings guesses being horribly inaccurate, but I thought two or three years ago they revamped the algorithm to where the ratings were supposed to be more accurate than they were before. I personally have found the ratings to be about 90 to 95% accurate for the most part, at least as far as what I view. There are of course cases where Netflix would guess I’d give something a three out of five and I ended up giving it a four, or where I would give something a four and end up giving it a three. I was just wondering if anyone else goes off these or if they’re still horribly inaccurate for some people.

Varies. Certain things have inexplicably high ratings, take Attack on Titan, a rather dull action anime series that seems to have a lot of praise on the interweebs. It has like a 4.5 star rating for me, I'd give it a 2. Otherwise, they're actually fairly accurate for about 85% of the stuff out there.

My biggest problem is that they didn't introduce profiles until very recently. So I still get suggestions "Because you watched Dora the Explorer".

Until they got profiles, my "recently viewed" would be 5 kid shows, zack and miri make a porno, 2 kid shows, american psycho. It was odd. All I want to do is watch some Dora, and my friends kids have to go screw it up by watching filth.

Up until my wife started watching a bunch of crap, the guesses were very accurate.

Same here. I am curious to see what our upcoming suggestions will be since Zombie Ass: Toilet of the Dead and Thomas and Friends: Muddy Matters were recent viewings.

Sometimes my roommate(female) will have a Grey's Anatomy marathon on my Netflix account and I have to go back and rate it 0 stars so Netflix doesn't start giving me similar recommendations.

The Netflix suggestions have always been fairly accurate for us. Back when we first signed up a few years ago, they had you go through and rate a bunch of TV shows and movies and then it would start suggesting things and after only a couple of dozen titles it started guessing my wife and I's likes almost spot on.

Re: Netflix’s guess ratings: How accurate?

I know all about other people messing up your profile suggestions. Before my brother moved out, me and him shared a Netflix account. We have pretty similar tastes for most movies, but when he would visit his girlfriend they would always stream TV shows I had no interest in watching or romantic comedies, so I was always getting really bizarre suggestions and my brother would put his own ratings in for movies, so that skewered the guess rating a lot. He moved out last August, so I've been able to clean up my profile and ratings and now the guess ratings and suggestions I get are more in line with what I'm interested in.
