Why do people like the lowly plebes against evil overlords
All movies have that ragtag group against the bad oppressors from Harold Ramis's movies to SW OT to you know. Hmmm.

It's storytelling 101. It's all about grounding. People need something to connect to. Something identifiable.

Hey! Oh except for the good, the bad and the ugly where it was more of a reservoir dogs situation.

Is there a time I want evil to win? I think that'd take a really good script.
I think ESB is the only one to come to mind.

Naked Zulu warriors against the British Army. Indian rebels led by Sitting Bull and Geronimo against John Wayne. Chinese resistance fighters led by Fu Manchu. Thuggee against the British Empire. Klansmen rescuing the white women from the villainous Black men.
You'll notice that all these movies were made before 1950. Dramatically, they're exciting and involving. But it's no longer socially acceptable to make movies that side with the overlords, even if they're white people like us against evil hordes. There is a workaround used by movies like Starship Troopers, where the evil hordes were space bugs.

The Professor could make a radio out of a coconut but he couldn't figure out how to fix a hole in a boat!

Painful as they are, watch the Star Wars prequels. When "good" gains too much power, balance must be restored and "evil" wins enough to settle it out. Then the balance tips too far and the scales go back the other way. It's a never ending cycle (which produces sequels).

Re: Why do people like the lowly plebes against evil overlords
Everyone thinks of themselves as underdogs, even if they themselves are in power. That is why we identify with underdogs, it's a natural instinct. Usually the motivations behind people in power are far more complex and harder to explain, which makes for difficult storytelling outside of books.
