Wait. My bad. For some reason I forgot the latter part of this thread's purpose.

Re: Roles that have been recast more than once

Since this is how people are answering:

What real historical figure has been portrayed by the most actors

Re: Roles that have been recast more than once

To tighten this up: not counting remakes, what roles have been recast more than once?

Re: Roles that have been recast more than once

When I first saw the header, I assumed you meant a role in a particular movie in which there was more than one cast change before it finished production. I know there have been plenty of movies where a role was changed once before shooting finished (e.g. FITZCARRALDO, APOCALYPSE NOW), but have there been any where a key role went through two or more cast changes during the pre-production and production process?

Re: Roles that have been recast more than once

Jack Crawford has been played by four different actors between Manhunter, Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal and Red Dragon.

Does this thread include TV as well as movies? Because there was no Jack Crawford in Hannibal (the movie).

There's a Crawford surrogate in the "Hannibal" film but its absolutely meant to be a different character. The character was in the book but Scott Glenn turned it down and the renamed character basically exists to mop up the vestigial remnants of Crawford in the screenplay in the same way George Hamilton's character in "The Godfather Part III" replaces Robert Duvall's Tom Hagen character.

Since there's no continuity between "Manhunter" and the Hopkins films and since the character only appears twice in that single continuity it's really down to Glenn/Keitel.
