Supernatural: Tribes (spinoff of Supernatural) coming soon (backdoor pilot on 4/29)

Aussie Nathaniel Buzolic and Brit Lucien Laviscount have landed the leads in Supernatural: Tribes, the planted Supernatural spinoff, which will air as an episode of the veteran sci-fi series on April 29. The choices blend the CW‘s strategies of casting standout players from its existing series as pilot leads, which is the case with Buzolic, a recurring on The Vampire Diaries and guest star on offshoot The Originals in his role as Kol, the-cwas well as bringing completely new faces, like Laviscount, whose only U.S. credit is an arc on the BBC/Showtime comedy Episodes. Other recent examples include Arrow star Stephen Amell, who first appeared on TVD, and the star of last year’s The Selection pilot, Yael Groblas, who had no previous U.S. credits. Buzolic and Laviscount also continue the trend of overseas actors getting pilot leads this season.

Written by Andrew Dabb and directed by Robert Singer, Supernatural: Tribes is described as a sweeping drama about the various mafia-esque monster families that unknowingly to humans “run” the underbelly of Chicago and who are being tracked by a newly minted Hunter who’s trying to stop them and rid Chicago of anything or anyone supernatural. Buzolic plays David Hayden, a shapeshifter from one of Chicago’s ruling monster families; he has been living as a human, having given up the monster life years ago. Laviscount plays Ennis Roth. When his fiancée is killed in the crossfire of the monster war, the resolute police academy trainee learns the truth about what lurks in the shadows and becomes a monster-hunter himself.

The April 29th episode of Supernatural is the backdoor Pilot. If this gets picked up, it will next season. I wonder if this gets picked up if they will have Ackles and Padalecki guest star in it a few times to get it some footing & interest.

Huge Supernatural fan, but this hasn't sounded appealing from day one. My only desire is that this not impact Supernatural in any way, shape or form... whether diluting cast/crew who come on to work on this, the ratings/lead-in/timeslot, or, if this is an epic disaster, support and belief in the mother ship by network and studio execs. Otherwise, I don't care one way or the other, except the premise *really* doesn't sound exciting or even simply fitting in with the fictional world of Supernatural.

Pretty crazily late in the game for the first spin-off attempt by a show though, isn't it? Aside from shows ending and spinning off a character(s) such as Frasier or Joey, as well as NCIS from JAG and probably L&O SVU, this is really a late franchising effort of a successful series, particularly one that apparently won't draw any of the stars from the original. Like I said, JAG-NCIS is the only comparable that comes to mind here (Little connection with the mothership, it being a show entering its final season (or two.))

It can't get much cheesier than Star-Crossed. They've actually hidden a couple of these backdoor pilots in Supernatural before this year, though never as intended spin-offs.

Yeah and last year's witch detective and his familiar was pretty poor. The worst part was they tried to introduce a new character as somebody fans should know.
