The Third Annual DVDTalk Action/Adventure/Crime/Mystery Challenge - March 2014

3rd Annual DVDTalk Action/Adventure/Crime/Mystery Challenge

Dates: Sunset on February 28th to sunrise on April 1st.

We have two at least slightly overlapping Challenges this year, so plan those days accordingly if you wish "double credit". What you watch from dusk on March 30th to dawn on April 1st could also count for the annual April B-Movie/Exploitation Challenge. And the first couple days of March will crossover with the annual Academy Award Challenge.

Rules: Sorta like all the other Challenges but as lenient as you can imagine. Everything counts as one: film, TV episode, short, trailer, DVD featurette, etc. Unofficial goal of hitting 100, but don't ignore real life to hit it. Everyone who shows up in either thread is an equal "winner". Anything listed on IMDB with a genre of action, adventure, crime, or mystery (or anything that even vaguely could be argued as should be listed as such) counts.

----->LIST THREAD<-----

Checklist is still open for discussion, and will be in post #3 for easier editing and cut and pasting.

Prizes: I am looking for sponsors, and would appreciate any help or leads in that area. I'm hoping for at least our consistently fantastic GoldenWheels and Hamilton Books. I am also going to donate at least one DVD from my expanding "doubles" corner. Everyone who actively participates will get one prize entry in the raffle. Active participation is defined as posting at least once in this discussion thread, and keeping your list post updated. Anyone who completes the optional and fairly simple checklist will get an extra chance in the raffle. Anyone who agrees to mail out an appropriate prize will get an extra chance as well.

This is the discussion thread. Discuss.

I've got Charlie Chan Boxes (1-5) I can donate as a prize. Volumes 1-4 are used, but the cases and discs are all fine.

1 - Warner Oland (box in good shape) - Charlie Chan in London / Charlie Chan in Paris / Charlie Chan in Egypt / Charlie Chan in Shanghai / Eran Trece

2 - Warner Oland (box is a kinda beat up) - Charlie Chan at the Circus / Charlie Chan at the Olympics / Charlie Chan at the Opera / Charlie Chan at the Race Track

3 - Warner Oland (box in good shape) - Charlie Chan's Secret / Charlie Chan at Monte Carlo / Charlie Chan on Broadway / The Black Camel

4 - Sydney Toler (box is a little beat up) - Charlie Chan in Honolulu / Charlie Chan in Reno / Charlie Chan at Treasure Island / City in Darkness

5 - Sydney Toler (new unopened box) - Charlie Chan At The Wax Museum/Murder Over New York/Dead Men Tell/Charlie Chan In Rio/Charlie Chan In Panama/Murder Cruise/Castle in the Desert

Is it acceptable?

If you don't mind used, I might donate something from my collection, but I will have to see if there is anything I don't watch anymore.

edit: The DVD I was thinking of, I can't locate, so won't be able to donate anything. Sorry.

How about adding Cynthia Rothrock and Claudia Cardinale to the 'Watch an item from at least five of these stars', block?

Hmmm...the format I watch so many of these films in is relegated to "etc." status!

(And, no, this isn't my collection, but for these purposes it'll do.)

How many participants from Canada? If there are more than, say, 5, I would send a Canadian only prize from my duplicate collection, since us Canadians are not eligible for the other prizes. If you're from Canada, speak up.

I've been itching to watch some Godzilla lately, and also thinking of tapping into a couple of my Mill Creek sets, like the Warriors 50 movie set, and my 20 movie martial arts set.

Re: The Third Annual DVDTalk Action/Adventure/Crime/Mystery Challenge - March 2014

I've been prepping for this one for a several months. Sometime back Amazon put all 5 of the Fox Charlie Chan sets on sale *very* cheap, I then stumbled across the Mr. Moto sets on sale at SAM's Club, and I just ordered the TCM Chan set from Hamilton (lowest price ever I've seen even with shipping added). I already owned the Charlie Chan Chanthology set (6 of the later Monogram releases). I also recently picked up the ROAN set of Mr. Wong films with Karloff and Keye Luke. Add the Bond, Poirot, Marple, Ellery Queen, It Takes a Thief, and The Man From U.N.C.L.E. sets I've purchased and never opened and I have the month locked down.

I'm most excited about watching the Charlie Chan films. My wife and I are both big fans of the series and I'd been waiting for the "right price" before picking up those Fox sets with Oland and Toler. While I won't be able to watch any with her (she's almost permanently staying with her mother who's in the final stages of COPD/Congestive Heart Failure - no we can't convince her to just come stay with us but I understand wanting to stay in your own house - at least she lives less than a mile away) it will be nice to see them again. When we were young marrieds a local channel ran the Chan films every Friday and Saturday at Midnight. We would stay up to watch them every weekend. Other than those in the Chanthology I think it's been 20 years or more since I've seen any of the Charlie Chan films. I may have to take a few of them to my mother-in-law's house and force her to watch them with us. I don't know if she's a fan or not - she mostly watches cop/reality/news/Cardinal baseball and has 1 TV so... (my wife does *lots* of streaming at her house but she typically will not watch a DVD anyway preferring to wait for something to just show up on TV).

Re: The Third Annual DVDTalk Action/Adventure/Crime/Mystery Challenge - March 2014

Some quick eligibility questions:

Fiction films/TV shows about auto racing: are they eligible for this challenge? I would think the subject falls under the heading of action/adventure.

Documentaries about criminals and outlaws who have been the subjects of movies (e.g. Bonnie & Clyde, John Dillinger, Al Capone, Jesse James, Billy the Kid, et al): are they eligible for this challenge?

Thanks.

Re: The Third Annual DVDTalk Action/Adventure/Crime/Mystery Challenge - March 2014

Got to thinking about some more movies I'm looking forward to watching for this Challenge. I have some Asylum Disaster movies, and I also own an unopened copy of The Adventures of Milo and Otis, which IMDB, lists as Family/Adventure. Always liked that movie, so when I saw it at a local CVS for $6, I grabbed it, but haven't gotten around to watching it yet, as I only recently located it, as it slipped behind a dresser when I bought it.

Re: The Third Annual DVDTalk Action/Adventure/Crime/Mystery Challenge - March 2014

In addition to the Shaw titles (maybe I'll go on a Chang Cheh spree), I'm getting in the first half of Space Adventure Cobra, I suspect It'll be relatively easy to burn through and adventure's in the title so how can I go wrong? Otherwise lot's of choices. I'll have to get in one or two Edgar Wallace Krimis and see if I can't finagle a viewing of Trick The Movie: Psychic Battle Royale (2010) (Trick The Movie: Last Stage (2014) will have to wait for next year).

Beyond that doing the checklist will give me a chance to watch whatever's suitable in my collection or Amazon or Netflix...Youtube is often quite amenable as well.

after the historical challenge (which is my fave) this is my second favourite challenge.

it's good that it overlaps the Academy Award challenge I have a couple of titles that will be in both lists.

Re: The Third Annual DVDTalk Action/Adventure/Crime/Mystery Challenge - March 2014

I am really looking forward to this challenge since eligible titles make up the majority of my backlog of stuff to watch. I am thinking of doing a heavy dose of Eurocrime stuff.

I'd ask if there is any chance we could get Henry Silva added to the stars list, but I will already probably watch a film with a majority of the stars you already have listed, so five will be no problem at all.
