CBS Gets NFL Thursday Night Football

It will air 8 games starting in the fall. Could have a huge impact on its already successful lineup...

Call it The Big Blitz Theory: CBS has won the rights to the NFL’s newly offered Thursday Night Football package, bringing football games back to broadcast TV on Thursday nights next season.

The Big Bang Theory will move to Mondays most likely. They can't afford to delay it 8 weeks. If CBS cans The Mentalist, I can see Elementary moving to Sundays.

As far as watching football, I like this news. I don't get the NFL Network.

This will end up re-writing their entire weekly schedule. The NFL is like a poisonous weed, infesting every network on television. Expect ABC to go even harder now after women.

Re: CBS Gets NFL Thursday Night Football

NBC is screwed if they stick with the weak comedy lineup.

If they think nobody is watching now, zero will be watching when football is on CBS for 8 weeks.

Are those real match-ups or are you just trying to imagine the worst piece-of-shit games possible?

Re: CBS Gets NFL Thursday Night Football

I personally hate Thursday football. I think it messes too much with the player's physical rhythms. I can't recall ever hearing people on a Friday talking about the great game that was played the night before.

Second part.

how good are the ratings right now? In the NFL channel?

It would be more useful if we knew the details. I'm sure the contract is not as good as the one for NBC Sunday Football.

Still funny reading the comments in EW:

This might actually be good news for Parks & Rec and Community. They'll be the only sitcoms on in the timeslot so the 60-70% of people who DON'T watch football may start paying attention.

It's obviously the latter. You can't put a team on Thursday night 3 or 4 times. The players hate the Thursday games, and the union wouldn't stand for it.

YES! I'd love to see the Texans on national television to start the year!

It wouldn't be an 8 week delay, it'd be closer to 6 weeks. The Networks don't normally start their new seasons until late September, early October. That's week 3 or 4 of the NFL season.

They might move The Big Bang Theory anyway, since Monday has been bleeding viewers and really needs a solid anchor.

Re: CBS Gets NFL Thursday Night Football

That schedule is saturated with Bills games lol

Would Nantz and Simms still do the games once the 8 week window on CBS ends?

TNT should have picked up this package instead and what is the point of CBS having Sunday afternoon games and a primetime game?

I miss the days when NBC carried the AFC and Dick Enberg was the #1 announcer.

Same here. The games are typically not very entertaining.
To be honest, I typically forget that there is a Thursday NFL game on.

Nantz and Simms are doing all 16 Thursday games in addition to their Sunday games. CBS according to the press release is producing the games now.

Re: CBS Gets NFL Thursday Night Football

The other broadcast networks will have to start scheduling a lot of counter-programming against CBS on Thursdays.

CBS just announced the Thursday lineup including TBBT will be delayed until November to accommodate football.

So...seems like their plan is to have football for September and October, then bring back their noted Thursday night line-up for Fall sweeps.

.
The NFL wanted to create a larger audience for its Thursday night games by putting them on one of the networks, not a cable channel. And considering what Sunday night football has meant to NBC, all the networks would jump at the opportunity to get a prime-time game. Even though these Thursday games won't generate the audiences that the Sunday night games do, the NFL wants to create a Thursday night football habit that people will carry over to the NFL Network for the second half of the season.

Good, hopefully that means a short pregame at 8 and 815-ish KO time. I thought them doubling down with BBT/TNF was a long shot (compared to a move or delaying it til November), but good to hear nonetheless.

You're not missing much. Thursday Night Football is usually crap games. About the only thing it's good for is background noise while you're making dinner or having a conversation.

This could backfire. It was a disaster for FOX when they carried all the MLB playoffs and World Series. By November, viewers have already picked their shows and established viewing habits. Getting them to change is difficult.

I have to wonder what the NFL network will use to bring in viewers without actual games for 8 weeks.

I'm imagining the worst possible match-ups.

I guess the NFL has no concern over player's safety or they would have pulled the plug on Thursday night football(only 3 days rest unless coming off a bye week).
