What is the MOST unnecessary remake in your opinion?
For me, my vote goes for:
ABOUT LAST NIGHT - The original with Rob Lowe was an average movie at best. The fact that we now have an all-African American cast does not justify that it needs to be re-done.

Awww, crap. I realize there's a thread similar to this one. Forget it, folks. Nothing to see here.

So you think they should only remake good movies? That there's no chance a remake of an average movie could improve upon it?

The 1994 THE GETAWAY with Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger. It was a word-for-word, shot-for-shot remake of Peckinpah's 1972 film with Steve McQueen and Ali McGraw, which was already fine as it was. What was needed was a new adaptation that stays close to Jim Thompson's book, in which the two lead characters are out-and-out sociopaths.

Psycho (1998). I'm not opposed to the idea of a Psycho remake, but doing it that way was completely unnecessary and idiotic.

Recently? Carrie. It barely added anything to the original classic except for a whole bunch of unconvincing CGI. And no Edie McClurg-laced Phys Ed montage either
Was there any point of Demme remaking Charade as The Truth About Charlie? He did bring a sense of Euro-style but the subject matter was still lightweight 60s Hitchcock-lite, and the leads were dead-behind-the-eyes bad (Thandie Newton and Marky Mark vs. Audrey Hepburn and Cary Grant? Good fucking luck...)
Either way, I'd much rather see a remake of a shitty/mediocre movie and make it better rather than taking a classic (or much loved) movie and remaking it because of "brand recognition" (Total Recall, Robocop, Fame, etc.)

Apparently they remade "The Bunker" (with Sir Anthony Hopkins as Hitler) as "Downfall" with Bruno Mars.

So not only did it not work as a shot-for-shot remake it didn't even work as a re-imagining. Those fuckers failed on several levels.

The reason for that is Soderbergh's film sticks closer to the book while Tarkovsky took ideas from the book and made his own film.
Just like Steven King was pissed at Kubrick, Stanislaw Lem was pissed with what Tarkovsky did with his material.
