That came out of nowhere.
Edit: Any other sources confirming this? A quick search indicates there was a false rumor of this in the last few days.

Apparent drug overdose. I know he's been battling heroin addiction for some time, but damn this is sad.

since he had a major role in the Hunger Games movies, they'll probably have to delay Mockingjay as last i saw principal photography hadn't started yet

A terrible shame, one of the true acting giants of his generation. It's difficult enough making it in Hollywood when you are one of the beautiful people, much less a very ordinary-looking person. It's a testament to his consummate skill as an actor that Hoffman had fashioned himself into a viable leading man of some sorts.
He carried lesser films such as The Master and A Late Quartet with his nuanced character portrayals and quiet intensity, not to mention his deep body of work:

That sucks. He was still a relevant, memorable actor. Since first noticing him in Boogie Nights, I've been in-tune with his career. This is bad news for any fan of modern film.

Re: Philip Seymour Hoffman has died
The sad thing is, it didn't. He was recently in rehab and there were several gossip reports of him still using and going to great lengths to circumvent the drug tests required for insurance on his film projects.
You can only help someone who wants to be helped, if an addict is dead set on continuing their self-destructive lifestyle there's not much that can be done to stop them.
In any case, it's still extremely sad, and a great loss.

What a waste. Have most of his movies on DVD, he was one of my favorites. He was a tremendous actor and to throw it all away like that is really sad. Definitely a huge loss in the film world though.
